Elias Vaughn

We got all of this groovy foreshadowing about him when his character first showed up, but, other than the few flashbacks seen in the 4th Mission Gamma book, very little of this has come to fruition.

I'm sure we'll get there eventually. All the delays to Fearful Symmetry haven’t helped I'm sure.

Okay, I know this may be a little off topic, but what is Captain David Gold's current age in the latest Corps of Engineers book? Also Captain Scott's Physical Age would be enlightening. He was about to retire to Norpin way back when and now he could be in charge of the SCE for at least a few more decades.

While I'm at it, when was the last time Uhura or Chekov were mentioned, and how old were they then?

Sulu's fate has been (thankfully) left ambiguous.

As noted by Keith already, Vaughn is in both Serpents Among the Ruins and The Art of the Impossible, both of which are Lost Era books, so some background is covered there.

True that, and excellent stories both, but it's his Spy-vs-Spy history with Section 31 that tantalizes the most. An epic confrontation between T'prynn and L'Haan, now that I'd definitely pay to see.

I could definitely see Vaughn and Calhoun having had some kind of history, what with their respective backgrounds working for the shadier side of Starfleet.
Except they don't. As established in Demons of Air and Darkness, Vaughn only knows Calhoun by reputation.

Gold is three years older than Picard -- he was a senior at the Academy when Picard was in his first year (and won the Academy marathon, viz. "The Best of Both Worlds Part 2"). So as of Remembrance of Things Past in 2377, he's 75 years old.

Ah yes, but not knowing someone doesn't mean one can't share a history with them... I just finished watching the first season of Heroes, loved it, one of the things I loved about it was not only all the intrigue and interplay between the various characters, but just how unaware most of them were, the majority of the time, of all the connections and interweavings that their lives shared.

After having read David Mack's Time to... books, I can definitely see how circumstances can arise which easily put one unknowingly at odds with another. Especially since Admiral Nechayev's shady little corner of Starfleet Intelligence seems a bit more dodgy than Vaughn's corner.

Bill Ross and Alynna Nechayev seem to have at least some ties to S31. But characters like Uhura, T'prynn, and Vaughn (who seems to be a bit of a protégé to Uhura), are at least sanctioned and have some kind of oversight, they're more on the level. And as characters who are forced to skate that line of moral ambiguity on a regular basis, one could imagine how they might feel when confronted with those who have crossed the line, as associates of the S31 are wont to do.

T'prynn, given her patterns in the 2260's, may have skated that line even more precariously than Elias or Nyota ever did, but she does have many years of potential twists and turns before 2349, so it's anyone's guess which roads she was inclined to walk down.

Not to mention, if one has read the end of Reap the Whirlwind, it's easy to believe that T'Prynn will at some point re-evaluate her beliefs and her methods.

Who created him and are their any articles/features that discuss his genesis?
Editor Marco Palmieri first conceived the character of Elias Vaughn, and his first appearances were in Avatar Books 1-2 by S.D. Perry.

He's appeared in:

DS9: Avatar Book 1 by S.D. Perry
DS9: Avatar Book 2 by S.D. Perry
DS9: Section 31: Abyss by David Weddle & Jeffrey Lang
DS9: Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness by Keith R.A. DeCandido
"The Other Side" by Robert Greenberger (Gateways: What Lay Beyond, cameo only)
TNG/DS9: Divided We Fall #1-4 by John J. Ordover, David Mack, et al (comic book miniseries)
TNG: The Battle of Betazed by Charlotte Douglas & Susan Kearney
DS9: Mission: Gamma: Twilight by David R. George III
DS9: Mission: Gamma: This Gray Spirir by Heather Jarman
DS9: Mission: Gamma: Cathedral by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels
DS9: Mission: Gamma: Lesser Evil by Robert Simpson
The Brave and the Bold Book 2 by Keith R.A. DeCandido (cameo only)
The Lost Era: Serpents Among the Ruins by David R. George III
The Lost Era: The Art of the Impossible by Keith R.A. DeCandido
DS9: Unity by S.D. Perry
SCE: Lost Time by Ilsa J. Bick (eBook)
Bajor: Fragments and Omens by J. Noah Kym (Worlds of DS9 Volume 2)
Ferenginar: Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed by Keith R.A. DeCandido (Worlds of DS9 Volume 3, cameo only)
DS9: Warpath by David Mack
DS9: Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods (forthcoming)

Did he have a small scene in one of the Maximum Warp books (Galanter & Brodeur), or I am I mis-remembering? I seem to remember wondering who the hell he was, having not read any DS9 relaunch books at the time.

^ No, he did not. Commander Tiris Jast, Vaughn's predecessor as XO of DS9 under Kira, did have a cameo in Maximum Warp Book 1, however.

Hmmm... Calhoun, Kira , and Vaughn could really be fun. I can imagine Calhoun getting under someone's skin at least once. Good one Baerbel.

Thanks for the insight David! A lot of the action of Warpath is right up this intrigue/thriller alley that I love so much. So thanks for that and 'Kill and 'Heal as well, your stuff is just rocking my socks right now. I haven't made it to Reap the Whirlwind yet, but I can't wait until I do. Your writing has an intricate and epic style, that puts you near or at the top of my all time favorites right now. The work that you and some of the other authors are crafting right now under the Palmieri administration is just magic.

As someone who has written for the characters of Vaughn as well as Ross and Nechayev, what do you think their thoughts are regarding this shadier side of utopia that they all seem to have operated in?
