As for the ending not requiring a peace treaty, the North's offer was for all their soldiers to go home and the status quo ante would be restored, along with the restoration of their votes in the electoral college.

To me the big mystery is why the Democratic Party didn't die along with the South.

Actually they kept control of the South for the next 130 years, which is pretty impressive run, especially when you add in their previous control for pretty much four-score and seven.
