El Aurians

I was checking out some info on the disputed territory of 'western sahara' and just realised where the writers got their idea for the name for the El Aurians, the capital of western sahara is 'El Aaiun' and just like the El Aurians of trek they could be classed as refugees with no homeland because Morocco is claiming the territory as their own!

Just thought i'd share my find. ;)

Western Sahara

It's possible. Names like Ferengi and Suliban were named after or at least inspired by real names and places, so the El Aurians might've been as well.

I'm sure it is in kanon. But El ...something is clearly arabic influenced. I think it means "of".

El Aurian most likely :)

We're trying to ascertain why the writers called them 'El Aurians' and Ive never heard the word Aurian meaning 'hear/listen' in any language, the only thing ive seen even close to the term El Aurian is the capital of western sahara.

auris is the ear hence hearing, the auricula is the lobe of the ear. So the stem of "aur" means listen/hear combined with "ian" ending indicating a person you get listener or one who listens. It is derived from Latin.

While I agree that there is definitely a Middle-Eastern influence to the name, I think its more likely that this is related to the Hebrew El, which means "God" (You see it in names such as Beth-El - "House of God"). The equivelent in Arabic is Al (a homophone of the word you're thinking of), which is a part of the name Allah.

So, if I'm right, the name would mean something like "God of Listening" or perhaps "God's Listener"

I think alot of the names come from real things. The only ones I can come up with off the top of my head are Romulus and Remus, but I know there are others.

Originally the word "Maquis" comes from a type of high ground in southeastern France covered with scrub growth.[1] It is the kind of terrain in which the armed resistance groups hid. Members of those bands were called maquisards. Eventually the term became an honorific that meant “armed resistance fighter.” The Maquis have come to symbolize the French Resistance.

Organians = ironically, no longer organic beings

Caitians = felinoids

Mr Atoz, a librarian = A to Z

Helen Noel = Kirk met her at a Christmas party

The vague Lethe = the River of Forgetfulness

Borg = cyborgs (cybernetic organisms).

I have a question.
Before "Rivals" aired, did we even know Guinan's race was called "El Aurians"?

I never saw the episode "Rivals", so I thought the first time it was mentioned was in "Generations".
