Morel is also in talks to direct Warner Bros.’s EDF, aka Earth Defense Force, a giant alien invasion movie which is being produced by Sam Raimi and Bill Block, head of QED International, the outfit that is financing the project.

The story is set after three alien fighters attack the planet, leaving countries humiliated. The governments of Earth then race to create a space fighting force in preparation for a second attack by an approaching alien horde.

Warners is high on Morel for EDF, which is a favorite amongst certain execs but is waiting to see how Ouija plays out.

This sounds just like Starship Troopers (1997).

I believe this is based on the 2007 videogame property by Publisher Sandlot:
Earth Defense Force 2017

It's the year 2017 and the world is being invaded by aliens that use Mecha and massive insect beings as their weapons. To combat this threat, the Earth Defense Force was formed. You play as a soldier on the front lines, fighting the alien invasion.

with a new 2011 game in the series
Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.
check out this 1:30 length gameplay video of EDF:IA.
so I'm guessing for the 2013 film the first 20 minutes will look a lot like the gameplay footage from Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.

Screw this Earth Defense Force stuff, just have the aliens abduct Liam Neeson's obnoxious daughter and he'll get aboard the mothership and tear through them in no time. Albanians, aliens, it makes no difference to him. He's got a very particular set of skills, and he's already killed most of the criminal underworld of France, so the only direction to go is up. Call it 'Taken 2: Extraterrestrial Bugaloo.'

In all seriousness, it sounds like it could be fun, and I like the idea of facing the alien invasion in space instead of on the ground. It has sort of a Robotech quality to it (though that's certainly not the only example; the Stargate shows being another one of no doubt many).

Although, it's another one of those stories that require the aliens to be complete idiots despite mastering interstellar flight just to give humans a chance to be able to stand up to them in battle. Why warn the humans of a coming invasion with a probing attack and then give them presumably months or years to prepare for your arrival?

I've seen every episode of Robotech about 5 or 6 times, thanks. TBH I didn't notice that anyone else had even mentioned Robotech incubus thread.

I guess I could have been more clear. I'm just noting the similarities between this project and Robotech.

first thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread. Game was fun but I could never get past the 3rd level.

dont know of anything that was based off of this game, but it started as a 2 player arcade game, and I would ASSume that the movie is atleast in some small way connected to it, given the title, but i could be wrong

Earth Defense Force is a pretty generic and self-explanatory name for an... Earth Defense Force. I doubt there's any connection despite the similar theme.

It was confirmed this morning Morrel has signed the project. I wonder if he'll stick with this one? Abandoned "Dune" after months of pre-production work, and then only a very short time on "Ouija". Next thing we know he'll drop this.
