A pair of earthquakes struck within 90 minutes of each near Christchurch, New Zealand, on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, reviving vivid memories of a deadly quake that killed more than 150 people in February. "It was quite an exciting ride," Christchurch Police Acting Inspector Murray Hurst told CNN after the first quake, adding that there was some damage caused by the quake and a few injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police evacuated sections of the city's central business district after reports of a possible gas leak, police said. Several bridges in the city was closed as a precaution.
The first quake -- a magnitude 5.2 -- was centered 9 kilometers (5 miles) east-southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), according to USGS.

I hope everyone in New Zealand is okay.

Wow. Bummer. 5.2 isn't likely to cause nearly the same sort of damage as the last one...but I'd think it would be tough from an emotional standpoint, so soon after a much worse one...

Well, the second one right after (it was a dual quake) was 6.1, so I'm hoping the structures can handle it. :(

:( - I hope they're okay. - I don't know the Richter Scale but I'm guessing that's bad.

Are there any Tsunami alerts?

It was scary. First one was a real decent jolt, with some tremors registering intermittently afterwards.

The second was vicious.

We have been stoic and proud in the face of these events. But this third big round of quakes is demoralizing. There are gangs of people that have spent months patching the roads up, only to see their hard work ripped apart in seconds.

Maybe it's time to condemn the whole damn city.

That's terrible. Hopefully, there were no injuries this time, at least. I can certainly understand how this would be demoralizing. :(

Hope all affected by these quakes are okay.

I'm fortunate to live in a part of the world that's relatively clement, so I've never experienced a vicious earthquake, and I'm not sure how well I'd deal with one.

But I think we all have experiences with the destructive force of nature. For example, I have plants that I've lovingly nurtured from seed, only to have them ravaged by an unexpected wind or turned to mush by overnight chills.

Destruction caused by a person would elicit anger and a desire to avenge, but destruction caused by nature is something we feel acceptance of, even though our sense of loss and wasted effort can be demoralizing.

But at the same time, we learn lessons about what nature wants and doesn't want. Acceptance of natural events can lead to a sense of respect that's almost spiritual, and that feeling can be powerful enough to quell any feelings of demoralization.

"Nature didn't want these plants to grow, and I shall accept that."

I'd like to think this same psychological mechanism can be employed in any natural disaster

The iconic cathedral is to be demolished. :(

One death has now been reported, although the death may not be quake related.

Glad to see you're okay, Candlelight. That's terrible about the church and the death, whether quake related or not. :(
