Early Breen concept art

Just curious, but what does everyone think of one of John Eaves' earlier renditions of the Breen ship? I'm mainly thinking of the V6/V7 design, though I'll admit I like it better going in the "wrong" direction. :D

I think the first few designs looked awesome. What we ended up with looked like crap, as is usually the case. I loved the Breen and their tech, but IMO, their ships were always butt-ugly. They could have done better, IMO... especially since they were a major recurring race.

I think the end result was okay too, although I can see how some fans might see the Breen ship as being a bit too "busy" and greebly. Mr. Eaves tends to have a fairly distinctive style to his work.

Very cool. Always loved the Breen BC, it's cool to see its development from an embryo of an idea into a bitchin', distinctive spaceship.

Indeed. A couple of those preceding designs smacked too much of "generic Eaves", being basically indistinguishable from Son'a fighters or Jem'Hadar cruisers. The asymmetric sickles are novel and menacing. (Well, even if asymmetric horseshoes as such are an Alien thing...)

Needs more cowbell, er, I mean, organic components. Glad they didn't go blade ship. Keep that for the Jem Hadar and Sona and countless aliens of the week. Heck the Valdore looks bladey...the Starfleet arrowhead ships look bladey...the pinched Klingon ENT ships looked bladey. The Borg got that Qweens diamond ship with blades, the Xindi had hooks and blades too. Star Trek had it people when we're defending countless meh designs instead of demanding better fresher ones disparate from each alien other. Whoa is me. Okay, last time I'm on here high. hahahahahahahahhahaahahahaaa

Well, the references to Breen biotech are IMHO nicely covered by the fact that the Breen ships seem to come in different sizes, gradually growing up from baby starships to big adults... Or at least that's what we glean from size comparisons between these ships and other, better known designs.

I still think they could have done a LOT better than what we ended up with. The ship need not be so overly-complex-looking, not to mention so flat-looking. They could have come up with something a lot simpler, and yet still mysterious, like the Tholians... their ships are simple geometric forms, yet somehow still convey a sense of mystery to them.

I liked the two-tiered approach to the ships and I like the design they went with the most among the candidates. But I do agree that the ship is rather flat and busy. Star Trek already did spheres and cubes of course, but I would have liked it had the Breen ships departed a little further from convention.
