Early “Search for the Ancients” Pitch

I once read somewhere (or I dreamed) of an idea that a writer or executive once pitched a Star Trek season in which Kirk’s Enterprise had a new mission—specifically to seek out an ancient super-race (either to find them or learn about them, I don’t remember). My recollection is that this was in the 60s or 70s and was for either a retooling of the TOS format or a TOS revival. Ring any bells?

Yeah, Stargate had a pretty good run with the idea of ancient aliens and interplanetary archaeology and DNA shenanigans, but looking into the past for the meaning of life is not a good fit for Star Trek.
