I just thought that after what happened to Trip. In this universe, Capt. Archer took on a much bigger role in Lorian's life. After all, they had both had the same thing happen to them.
I didn't know that about rank. As far as that goes maybe he wanted to stay the same rank as his parents. While he did sit himself in the Captain's chair he never referred to himself in that rank. I still think the only person he thought of as Captain was Archer.
 
In naval terms, whoever is in charge is by definition the Captain. In the US Navy, as seen on The Last Ship, some ships are captained by officers holding the rank of commander. (And then leaders start getting called "skipper.")

Maybe officers can only promote junior officers to the ranks below them, and not to their own level? In which case, without admirals, there'd be no one around to make Lorian a captain in rank. But, then again, he activated Skynet, so does he really deserve it? :p
