As a life long science-fiction reader, and with a particular eye towards total civilization collapse...
I see it happening now! Within ten years:

1) no money = no hospital
2) no money = no food
3) stealing food = for profit prison
4) For profit prison = Slavery
5) back to the Confederacy, and pillowcases for all!
6) It's those Poor people eating our fruit! How DARE they?
7) maybe we can buy food from the savages...
8) Maybe the savages ARE food...
9) WE (rich folk) MUST SURVIVE AT ALL COST!!!!
10) 10,000 yrs from now, finding an egg-beater, "This was used to call God!!
"The Lord says we must whisk to prove worthy! All Hail Whisk!!'
11) Somehow, someway, some one says "That looks like an egg-beater..."
12) HEATHEN!!
13) it all starts again, while we sad folk look to the stars, and ask them to shine their
light on us.

A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!

The Lord is my chef; I shall not order takeout. He maketh me to lie down in Fran's Restaurant; he leadeth me beside the still coffee mug. He restoreth my breakfast; he leadeth me in the paths of the #1 Yonge-University Line from Union to College Station for my stomach's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of the TTC, I will fear no commuters, for thou art with me; thy subway map and thy Presto card, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine wait staff; thou anointest my bread with yolk; my plate runneth over. Surely bacon and grits shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Fran's on Yonge & College Streets forever.

Civilization is far more fragile than most people realize. It doesn't take much for it to come unraveling apart. In the latter half of the 20th century it became harder for it to happen, because of abundance and technological advantages. The peak of resilience was probably before the social media era of the Internet. But now... this mechanism has enabled rapid communication across many groups... and prone to abuse by outsiders to tamper the messaging. It's easily corrupted. And it has enabled the proliferation of ignorance, arrogance, and lying.

What we're witnessing going on in American government right now is downright dystopian. The lies are so substantial and prolific. We're seeing bold faced corruption, out in center, yet labeled as "good for you." So many clueless people buying it, those who have aligned themselves with their political team where the fervent belief is equivalent to religion.

I think we're ripe for some serious social conflicts. Damaging riots. And... imagine if jihadists take advantage of the timing and start setting off bombs. We'll be well on our way to a militancy. That's if things continue as they are.

We are hanging by a thin thread of legislative investigation. If it's suddenly cut, we're in big trouble.

My hope is that in the coming year, the FBI will have completed a massive investigation that uncovers a high level of corruption not only in the present executive administration, but in the house as well. People like Devin Nunes who seek to create a convincing dossier of false information to incriminate a legitimate investigation. All of these complicit participants routed out. Many to lose their jobs and face punitive damages, including prison sentences. I have a strong feeling that will happen, which is why the current party in control is working feverishly to fight it. *IF* there was nothing to worry about, they'd be cooperative and encouraging, to help wrap it up quickly. The only plausible reason for their behavior is guilt. They know it. They fear their time is short so while the going is good they endeavored to pillage our economy and pay off their donors/special interest with massive tax breaks, in addition to themselves (looking at YOU Bob Corker), so that they'd be showered with wealth when they leave office (cushy high paying jobs, massive funding of post-office endeavors, outright payouts in off shore accounts, etc). They need the current man in charge just long enough to enact their egregious, "rape the middle class" tax bill.

It's clear over the years that American politicians have suffered corruption here and there, but the checks and balances would usually iron them out... then corruption kinks would rise again, to later be flattened once again. It's a different story today. VERY different.

OK, this thread started extremely thin to begin with, then you went and brought misogyny into it. I think we're done here.

(With apologies to @Gary Garland , who seemed to be the only person who wanted to discuss the subject matter seriously... if you want to continue with that discussion, please feel free to start a new thread.)
