DWM #413 and the Fave Stories Poll Results

Worf2DS9

I picked up Doctor Who Magazine #413 yesterday and they have the voting results for all 200 DW TV stories.

The Top 10 are:
10. "Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways"
9. "The Robots of Death"
8. "City of Death"
7. "Pyramids of Mars"
6. "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood"
5. "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances"
4. "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"
3. "Genesis of the Daleks"
2. "Blink"
1. "The Caves of Androzani"

How does this look to you lot? Agree? Disagree? (And for the record, at the bottom of the heap, at #200, is "The Twin Dilemma"). I have all the "nuWho" episodes on DVD, of course, but I'm also pleased that I own two of the three classic stories that appear there as well. I haven't seen Pyramids of Mars since I was a kid, but vividly remember that big, chesty mummy!

Also, this issue came in 4 different covers. Which one did you get? I got the Tennant one, though I would have liked to have gotten the Eccleston. I didn't have a choice, though, since I bought the only copy they had. :)

1 - I still disagree with their arbitrary numbering. There are far more than 200.

2 - No Sixth Doctor stories in the top 10? And any Sixth Doctor story at the bottom of the list? It's rigged.

3 - Turn Left, one of my favorite episodes of ... anything - not in the top 10? No, thanks.

Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways? The only way that cop-out doesn't look so bad is if you've seen that second part of The Stolen Earth. Whatever that was called.

<rant> WTF?! No Marco Polo or The Tomb of the Cybermen - it was rigged! </rant>

Really, it seems like it was compiled by someone from the US who has only seen stuff on PBS (which shows Tom Baker most of the time) and stuff from 2005 or later.

I really liked all the nuWho eps that are on that list, but even I think there seems to be an inordinate amount of nuWho in that top ten.

I'm glad Caves of Androzani came in first. That's one of the handful of classic eps that I've seen so far, and I LOVED it.

Personally, I'd get rid of Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. It was good, but not great. And I'd probably up Human Nature/Family of Blood a couple spaces, if only because Tennant in those episodes gave what was probably one of the best television performances EVER.

It's awfully Fourth/Ninth/Tenth Doctor heavy with only the Fifth Doctor getting any appreciation (granted it's number one) outside of that trio. I know a lot of people disagree but I think The War Games is one of the best Doctor Who serials, so it is sorely missed, as is such classics Marco Polo, The Aztecs, Inferno, Vengenance on Varos, and Remembrance of the Daleks, to name a few.

And I would say either The Gunfighters or "Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks" is the worse Doctor Who story.

I think the only one in there I'd not be keen on seeing in a top ten is Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. Frankly Army of Ghosts/Doomsday is better...and frankly I'm appalled that Fenric doesn't make the top 10 :bolian:

Okay, they are all good stories, but they aren't the top ten. Turn Left and Midnight both deserve to be there. They were simply brilliant. But I'm glad Blink is there.

How on earth Robot's of Death keeps getting in to the top 10 is beyond me... it's, well, embarrassing! Epitome of what was wrong with old Who! Give me Tomb of the Cybermen of that tripe any time!

Robots of Death should be #1!!

Mitty, I actually agree about Midnight, but I don't get the love for Turn Left.

I'll rewatch Robot's of Death sometime this week. I watched it and found the dialogue, the set design, alien names (Zigma, Zulon etc) were all terrible and camp... maybe I'll appreciate it more on a second viewing... or maybe it's serial you need to have nostalgic feelings for to appreciate?

About the only thing wrong with Robots is the silly headgear the miners wear. What's truly great about it is how much of a feel we get for the sandcrawler's crew's world, it really is quite impressive.

I only agree with two of those stories being on that list: "Genesis of the Daleks" and "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances".
