DWM 405 in the USA - anyone??

I understand there have been some sort of distribution problems with 405 and 406, but that 405 has started showing up in Borders and Barnes & Noble. Just wondered if anyone in the New York City or New Jersey areas has come across it yet...

#404 had Miss Hartigan in the snow on the cover. #404 seemed to take ages to show up over here. #405 has "Who is Matt Smith?"

I got #405 at a Connecticut B&N this weekend, so not far off your area.

I used to never see DWM at my local B&N, but now they consistently beat Borders to it.

Here in Canada I'm a wee bit behind in my DWM reading. I'm about halfway through #403, still have #404 waiting in the wings, and evidently I have to keep an eye out for #405 now. Good to see Matt Smith will be appearing on the cover. But don't they usually do the new-Doctor cover like MATT SMITH IS DOCTOR WHO as they've done for pretty much all the Doctor actors since the magazine has been around? Or does that come after the WHO IS... cover?

I think the 'X is the Doctor!' covers appear when their first episode is broadcast - for example the 'Peter Davidson (sic) is the Doctor!' cover was on issue 61, however Davison first appeared 6 months before on issue 55 (which was 'Introducing Peter Davison').

Colin Baker's first appearance was on issue 88 (which was his 'Colin Baker is the Doctor') cover, while McCoy's never got an '...is the Doctor!' cover - his first issue was 124, which just had the caption 'The New Doctor'.

McGann's first cover was issue 236, and Eccleston's was 342, both when they were revealed, however given the lack of TV broadcasts at the time, it's not a surprise that they got a cover straight away. Finally Tennant's first cover was issue 359 (the ..is the Doctor!' cover), however this was after Series 1 ended.

So on the whole. although most Doctors' first appearance on DWM was their '...is the Doctor!' cover, at the same time you'll notice they were never introduced as the Doctor until they had actually taken over (with the exceptions of McGann and Eccleston, since when they were announced there was no incumbent Doctor on-screen). Plus there was the whole Davison issue, who never got a proper '...is the Doctor' cover until issue 389, thanks to the infamous foul-up in 1981 :)

The problem with Smith is that there will be a year between his announcement and his actual taking over the role. During that time it would be very unprofessional of DWM to jump out with a cover saying Smith is the Doctor, when until 2010 Tennant will still be in the role. No doubt whenever Smith takes over on-screen, then DWM will come out with their 'Matt Smith is the Doctor!' cover.

Indeed, in the editorial for #405, Tom Spilsbury says, "You may have noticed that we haven't used a particular much-anticipated headline on the cover of this issue -- don't worry, it will happen, but not for a while yet." He then goes on to explain that's because right now, David Tennant is still the Doctor, while Matt Smith is the future.

The mag does have a seven-page interview with Smith, the only one he's going to give for a while, apparently.

Found it! If anybody else in NYC is looking, the Borders near Penn Station has several copies.

About halfway through the issue now - the Matt Smith interview is great!

I picked it up today as well, and skimmed through it -- lots of Smith stuff -- then filed it away until I'm finished the previous two issues. :) Cool cover though.

Read fast - according to Diamond Shipping's website, DWM 406 is due to hit comics stores this week! :)
