DVDs..wouldn't it be cool?

Wouldn't it be cool if you could buy (either a DVD or Download) what ever TREK episodes you want so that you could only buy the ones you want? Sort of like your own 'personal' selection. This way you wouldn't have to buy ALL of TNG's season #1 (you could get Neutral Zone and Conspiracy only, for example)...Same thing for all the episodes?

Yeah, I know, you could bid for them on Ebay..but thats not my point. Paramount should just offer up each episode on a single DVD (or media download for us who have already started to phase out of DVD) in a library...you go there, order the ones you want, and thats it.....

I think this is where all studios will eventually get to, but I want it...NOW!!!

Why? Because, like most of you, I bought my TNG DVDS when they came out, years ago...and some of them are getting worn out. So instead of having to buy the whole damn set again, this would be more affordable.

Doesn't iTunes offer exactly this?
Yes, is does. But only if you want episodes from:

TOS Seasons 1 or 2 or Season 1 remastered
Season 1 of ENT
Season 1 of VOY
Season 1 of DS9

Or any of the movies.

Soundtrack albums from TNG
And a small selection of audio books

No kidding. That's all I found.

This is a feature I would LOVE, when it comes to TNG and ENT, so I could legally handpick the episodes I want--in both cases, there are not enough episodes I'd want to have forever, to justify the purchase of the entire set, but there ARE quite a number that are worthwhile by themselves. (I would LOVE, for instance, to purchase "The Wounded" and "Parallels," and some episodes like that!)

I would imagine there is not much money to be made in that sort of venture... except for the suckers who buy TV on iTunes. Anyone really interested in that sort of thing is probably acquainted with selective file downloading with... oh, what's it called...

Worn out?? Please explain. Damaged perhaps and unplayable but worn out? Oh and be quiet before Paramount hears you. We completists dont need yet another version to add to our collections. VHS, DVD, Remastered DVD, and Blu-Ray around the corner. Now you want single episodes ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I have no more room.

You can buy individual episodes on VHS, I've done it. And... I won't continue that line of thought there... but maybe its a matter of time...

Also, I think you can still get decent quality on Itunes, and if you put that on a DVD, it'd still look okay on your TV, as it has lower resolution than your computer monitor...

So what do you do, ICEMIZER, if one of them breaks? Go out and by the entire set?

I think they would sell more if they just sold by the episode. But it doesn't matter, they're going to start doing it eventually. They just need to hurry up...

DVDs will be dead in 15 years, if not sooner. Streaming and downloading from the source is coming faster than a speeding bullet. NETFLIX online just took a big chunk out of DVDs last year....the end is nigh

Doesn't iTunes offer exactly this?

Ummm...how large is an ITUNE screen??? maybe the technology has evolved, but my daughters is about the size of her hand...who wants to watch STAR TREK like that? I want it on my 56 inch!!!!....

Rob
Yeah, iPod screens are pretty small. But I can also watch stuff on my laptop (admittedly not a 56" screen, but much larger than my 2"x2" iPod).

But is it hidef and all that? Now, having asked that, I have downloaded AMERICAN IDOL episodes and they seem to be in HIDEF on Itunes...maybe im wrong I dont know...

Rob

RS are you throwing these DVD's at the wall or something? A little sandpaper on the edges of the docking hubs or a cue-tip and some silicon spray will make them easier to remove. Havent had one snap on me yet.(fingers crossed for tomorrow nights viewing)

Being able to custom-create my own boxed sets is the only way I'd ever purchase VOY or ENT. There are only a handful of episodes that I really enjoyed and would be willing to pay to own on DVD. If I could put together a set of maybe 10-20 episodes, that would be good enough.

They are if you have the right cables and video cards to go from there to using your HIDEF tv as a dual monitor. I've done it with just an S-Video cable through my vcr since my tv is from the 70's and doesn't have the ports

The one thing I'm waiting for one day is the when there able to bring out a form of media where you can fit a whole series or season onto a single disk or chip. That way for Star Trek all you would have would be five discs if it is whole series or 29 discs for whole seasons and maybe including or adding a disc for special features.

There's alot of things like this in the works, part of why Blu-Ray won't last, but that's another thread...

Honestly, if I'm going to own it, I want a complete collection. I can't imagine picking and choosing like that. (shrugs)

Depends on how much you like the series in question. DS9--I totally agree, and I had to have them all. Same with nuBsG. (And possibly someday for Frasier, if I ever get the money for that!)

But something like TNG...I would prefer to handpick. There's a lot of great stuff, but just as much I'd just as soon pass on.
