DVD Re-release on the horizon?

I was looking over DVDPriceSearch the other day, and I noticed that the 2002 Special Editions for all of the movies could be had individually for about $8-$10 depending on the store; perhaps I have a cognitive bias from too much time spent hunting for DVD sales, but a steep discount for a DVD edition of a popular film is sometimes a precursor of an Even More Special Edition on the horizon, and Trek XI will provide a natural tie-in opportunity.

Out of curiousity, does anyone think-or hear inklings-that the films will be redone again soon, conceivably for HD/BluRay?

Can't say I've heard anything, though with the re-releasing of TOS on HD-DVD and talks of doing a remastered TNG, I can't say I'd be surprised at all.

I have all 10 on DVD and quite frankly, I wouldn't be in a rush to buy yet another release of the films anytime soon.

Considerin' ya can get most if not all ten movies at Wal-Mart for $7.50 each, I doubt that there will be anything new any time soon. And since the two disc releases were the second time the movies got the DVD treatment, I'm thinkin' there won't by anything 'til Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

And since I don't have Blu-ray or HD-DVD, I'll settle for the ten two-disc releases, though I would like to track down a copy of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country on single disc. I fuckin' hate the "character shots" durin' the Spock / Valeris mindmeld.

Agreed, I think the new shots totally kill the mood in what, in the theatrical edit, is a VERY uncomfortable scene to watch, as it SHOULD be. Too bad the single disc edition is only 4:3 letterboxed and not 16:9 anamorphic, but you can't have everything.

On a somewhat related note, I also prefer the theatrical cut of TWoK to the director's cut. I know I'm probably in the minority in that regard, but to me the added material, though interesting, seems... awkward. Maybe I've just seen the movie so many times my brain can't accept the changes.

Undoubtedly once the 'special edition' of Trek XI is out, we'll have another movie boxset, this time of all 11, probably with a half hour's new extras to tempt those of us with previous sets.

Well we won't be getting that DVD until around summer/fall 2009, so who knows? Maybe the "format war" will have a more clear-cut leader by then and they'll do the whole lot on a next-gen format.
