One of the first great video games of the old school DOS era, was the 1989 game EGA Trek (they later removed Star Trek ships for some reason, but it's still probably available uncensored, as version 1.0, 2.0 and 2.31, which didn't yet replace the Enterprise with the Lexington, and Klingons with Mongols). It's a game which I think people used to share with each other in workplaces across the USA and Europe, and which enjoyed a high reputation as an early example of a deep video game.
In the game, you take command of the Constitution-class USS Enterprise, in the middle of a war with the Klingons (in this case during Kirk's era, but could quite easily be Pike's experience of the war in 2256). The game was known for being extremely detailed about starship functioning, with phasers having a temperature gauge, repairs being prioritized, landing parties being sent down to planets via either shuttles or transporter, even a mechanic for looting Klingon weapons from surrendered cargo ships.
Don't let the old school graphics fool you, I remember seeing someone play it in the late 90s, and they were impressed by the depth and playability of it. More detailed than most modern games, captures the feel of the setting well, and works on modern systems, as long as you run it on DOSBox. Trek hasn't had a faithful game that captures the setting well in a long time, but during the 90s in particular, there were ones of extremely high quality, such as Judgement Rites, which actually added new and believable detail to the Trek universe. If you are a Trek fan, you owe it to yourself.
