DS9 Rebirth

I'm planning a reboot of DS9 using fanfiction. The reason? B&B totally screwed it up. Section 31 doesn't belong in Star Trek, the Federation would not have used genocide as a weapon to beat the founders, and they shouldn't have had the Prophets living in the wormhole. You should never reveal whether a religion is right or wrong, unless you plan to make the God/Gods it beleves in the series villian.

Also, I'm going to be recasting Sisko as Richard Dean Anderson. Why? Because he was up for the part and he owns Avery Brooks.

I'm writing a drabble for each character to introduce them.

This is Sisko's:

Ben Sisko watched silently as they lowered Jennifer's casket into the ground. The lawn chairs that had been filled by family and friends were now empty. His eyes were red from crying and his fingernails were digging into his palms.

For the last ten years since his assignment as Executive Officer, Sisko and his wife had lived on the USS Saratoga, along with their son Jake. However, two weeks ago the Saratoga was attacked by the Borg while resupplying a Federation colony. They had appeared out of no where and killed a third of the crew.

Sisko could see the Ensign standing at the entrance to the graveyard but chose to ignore him. He eventually made that impossible, however, as he walked over and sat beside him.

"Sir, I'm sorry to disturb you, but I was sent to deliver this to you."

"Thank you" Sisko said as he took the starfleet issue PADD.

As the Ensign got up and disappeared, Sisko activated the PADD and read it. Starfleet had assigned him to command some space station in the Bajor sector. He tossed it on the seat next to him as he grit his teeth.

I will read what you do because I think you have a real challenge ahead of you. I think those darker elements of DS9 are what made it tick. Mess with that formula and you get something more, well, mellow like....Jason of StarCommand...

But, as I said, i will read it...wow me!!!

What I want to do with this series is explore why and how the Federation goes to war without sacrificing their principles. There will still be plenty of ass-kicking, but just not fighting dirty.

Here's Kira's drabble:

Kira trotted down the steps leading to the Militia's HQ. The building was actually a series of tunnels that ran through out the capitol. The resistance built them during the occupation as a means to move personnel to different targets without arousing the Cardassian's suspicions. They were now serving as barracks as the Bajoran resistance transitioned into a full fledged militia.

"Major" shouted a voice behind Kira "This just came for you."

"Thank you, Private."

She waited until she reached her quarters to open the large package. Inside she saw a uniform and a Bajoran style PADD. The Militia was short on funds, so only a few members of the militia were being given a uniform. They had became coveted possessions, and symbols of Bajors new independence. However, Kira didn't feel that way after she read the PADD.

The Provisional Government had granted Starfleet use of Terok Nor, and the new Commanding officer, an over the hill yahoo from Louisiana from what she had heard, had requested her as his XO.

She threw the whole package across the room, shattering a mirror on the opposite wall. How could Shakkar have approved this?! She had been glad when her old resistance leader had been elected First Minister, but now she was starting to doubt him.

She wasn't going to go and babysit a bunch of science geeks while they studied that damn wormhole. She would take this up with her superiors in the morning. Now she was too tired. She slipped out of her clothes and went to bed.

Personally, I liked the darker aspects of DS9. Section 31 was a terrific addition to the franchise, showing that some people are fanatical enough about paradise to betray it in order to save it (from their point of view, anyway).

That said, I would be interested to see how you go with this.

I always thought that B & B had limited oversight of DS9, anway. Being more focused on Voyager.

B&B had very little input into DS9, as said above, they were mucking up Voyager instead.

I don't believe that DS9 was wrong in what it portrayed. It showed a more realistic human civilisation, that we would go as far as we needed to in order to secure victory. The Prophets in the wormhole are not gods and have never been portrayed as such, only interpreted by the Bajorans in that way - but even then more as teachers and guides than gods.

Reboot DS9 all you want, but I won't be reading it. That said, you have a clear and concise writing style which is nice to see in today's descriptive world.

Star Trek isn't supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be a morality play.

They were portrayed as gods in TNG. Then they changed it to fit their plans for DS9.

Reboot DS9 all you want, but I won't be reading it.

That's your choice.

Thanks.

Here's Jadzia's drabble:

Jadzia watched as Kurzon faded from consciousness. She, or rather Dax, felt a pang of sadness. He had been a great man. Tears rolled down the Trill's eyes as her new symbiote's memory was unintentionally shared with it's new host.

Suddenly the double doors on the other end of the room swooshed open and in stepped a short human male dressed in a Command division starfleet uniform. On the right side of his collar, there was a lone pip, denoting the rank of Ensign.

"Sorry to interrupt, Ma'm" the Ensign said, blushing a little as Jadzia was covered only by a sheet "This just came for you."

Jadzia took the PADD the man offered and waved him out of the room as she read it. She was being re-assigned to Terok Nor, or DS9 as Starfleet had redesignated it. She felt her heart skip a beat. Terok Nor was being used as a base of operations for Starfleet's efforts to study the newly discovered Bajoran wormhole, possibly the first stable wormhole known to man.

I've got to disagree with you on some of your criticisms of DS9, and throw my $.02 in behind the others who've pointed out that Berman and Bragga actually had very little to do with DS9. B&B apparently considered the show to be the franchise's red-headed step child. Michael Piller, Ira Steven Behr, and Ron Moore all had much more influence over the series than did B&B.

As for a re-imagining of the series in fan-fiction format, I'd say 'why not?' Though, I'm at a loss for why you'd change the principle actor? To be honest, I can't see the wise-cracking RDA in Avery Brooks' shoes... but hey, your universe, your rules.

I'm just throwing it out there for you, but has it occurred to you that the reasons you've stated for not liking DS9 is the reason many of the rest of us enjoyed the show? Remove all the darker aspects and character friction from DS9 and you're left with TNG on a space station.

I know some people will not like my version. They've got the "official" version :P

This will not, however, be TNG on a space station. It will still be dark, just not amoral.

Well, the thing is, they did consider RDA as Sisko and if I had been in charge of casting I would have gone with him because I am an RDA fanatic :P

Here's O'Brien's:

Keiko O'Brien sprinted down the corridor, tears streaming down her face, and nearly ran over a nurse as she turned into sickbay at breakneck speeds.

"MILES!" She screamed.

She finally found him the distant corner of the room, being carried away on a stretcher by Doctor Crusher and two medics.

The frantic asian woman ran towards her husband but was held back by two nurses.

"Miss" one of them said as they struggled to keep her from reaching him "you need to wait here. You're not authorized to enter the operating room. Please control yourself!"

Keiko glared at the woman and reared back to slap her, but Commander LaForge stepped in, grabbing her arm and then pulling her to him and hugging her. They sat down on one of the nearby biobeds as he continued to comfort her.

Chief O'Brien had been exploring a derelict vessel with seven other members of the Enterprise crew. He had attempted to bring the computer core online, which caused an overload in the ancient power systems and the conduit he was working on exploded in his face...

TWO MONTHS LATER

Doctor Crusher had had to replace the Chief's right arm with a robotic limb, and his right foot had spent two weeks in a cast, but the worst part was the fact that he would never be able to return to duty. His body could no longer handle the physical demands of working in the engineering department of the Enterprise.

Now his sickleave was up, and he was trying to decide what he was going to do now.

"Honey" Keiko announced, her smile ear to ear "You've been assigned to DS9, Chief of Operations."

And that will be easier on his body? OOOOOKKKAAAAAAYYYYYY......

I forgot to mention that according to my version of Star Trek Chief of Operations on a Station isn't the equivalent to Chief of Engineering on a starship. It is the same as what Data does onboard the Enterprise, monitoring the ship's operations and power distribution.
