DS9 deserving of a movie?

Does anyone think that DS9 deserves a movie? In my humble opinion, YES! DS9 was a great show, with excellent character development, fantastic space battles and good, solid storylines!

Yes, but it will never happen.

I feel like the characters all went their separate ways, so it would seem very contrived for them all to show up in a movie together.

Most of the story issues were resolved - only one or two threads were left hanging. I kind of like it as one, complete package that way. Very much like real life.

Deserving? yes.
Ever going to happen? no.
The show is too niche, too little known by the public at large and too complex for non fans after 7 years.

It's too bad Paramount didn't alternate between TNG and DS9 movies back when the shows were in the public view. That would have been great.

I agree..besides, we'd probably get new writers and producers who would gut what came before...I like that DS9 had, pretty much, a well done ending. Anything else might ruin the fine legacy DS9 left behind..

No, I don't think DS9 should have a movie. I don't think TNG should have had a movie. The movies were meant to give an honorable end to TOS. None of the TNG movies have been very good, IMHO, and I think that's because Trek works much better as a TV show.

I don't get why people want movies. The Trek films have mostly been just two-hour TV episodes with a bigger budget, so what's the point? To see it on a big screen?

You know what deserved to be made into a film? A good script...something the Trek films have had a difficult time finding.

Come again? The movies were meant to put new Trek product out there. The only reason we got The Motion Picture instead of "In Thy Image" was because Star Wars and Close Encounters made more money than God, and Paramount wanted a piece of that action more than they wanted a new TV network (which most likely would have fallen apart faster than UPN).

No arguments there.

eta: As to the OP's question, I don't really think DS9 deserved a movie. It was never popular enough with the fans, and unlike TNG, it was certainly not open-ended in its finale. TOS ended abruptly, and TNG ended in such a manner that it felt like they could go on if they wanted to. DS9 came to a definite parting of the ways, as different characters left the station, and the Dominion War storyline which dominated the last three seasons drew to a close. There was no need to do a movie.

I meant why Roddenberry wanted to do it, not why Paramount agreed to do it. Also, why was there a market for new Trek? Because the fans were disappointed in the ending of TOS.

I know, It's only a faint dream. I was only speaking of a personal want, I didn't really give any thought to the economics or demographics angle! Your definitely right about the the movie never getting made, I'm sure, given the track record recently, it might not be as great as my head might imagine!

They could have spared us the Insurrection and Nemisis vomitfests and given us a dominion movie in some form, but now that the war is over Im not sure what the plot of it would be.

This pretty much summes up my thoughts about a DS9 movie.

That might stop a big screen movie, but not necessarily a straight to DVD movie. I'd be happy to see a DVD movie based on DS9.

Not me...the last BAB-5 direct to DVD effort was awful. DS9 should never be touched again...it had a begining, middle and an end. Something no other TREK show had, except for Voyager...but DS9 was done better, IMO.

I miss DS9, and I think I missed it the day it was over because I knew even then there would be no going back...

RIP
DS9...you were number one!

I thought that the other day, after considering this question, thinking about Ark of Truth, the recent Stargate SG-1 straight-to-DVD movie. But the big difference there is that Ark of Truth carried straight on from the series. Cast members were in place, sets were built, production team was up and running - 75-80% of the setup costs had already been adsorbed by the show that preceded it. Same scenario with Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.
Deep Space Nine is different - it's been off the air for years, the cast have moved on, the sets are long since demolished, the production team broken up, the writers gone their separate ways. To ressurect it would be prohibitively expensive, just for a DVD movie, and a big budget theatrical release would never make its money back.
There just aren't any potentialyl profitable options for returning DS9 to life, as things stand.

^ Good thing we have 173 wonderful episodes of Deep Space Nine to enjoy over and over for many years to come. We don't need a movie. ;)
