Driving to Salem, ORE this Wednesday

Hubby decided to take some days off--a shocker right there--and we're gonna visit a friend there.

We've never driven in really bad weather. Light snow flurry, heavy rain, wind/dust with tumbleweeds, but no actual mountain weather. That's the only part making me nervous.

But back OT--anybody know some good local places to eat? Something besides the chains, that would give us local northwest food flavors?

12 days and counting for Bar results.

Re: Driving ?to Salem, ORE this Wednesday

Well that's a coincidence. One of my old HS friends currently has "Salem, OR" as his AIM away message. Is there something going on there right now?

Re: Driving ?to Salem, ORE this Wednesday

Not that I know of. I'm checking online for the sights to see. We wanted to go out to hole-in-the-wall places, not just chains or generic "Italian food" or "Mexican food", etc.

That's a tough one, since I usually go out to chains with friends when I'm back home. The hole-in-the-wall type restaurants can be found downtown (not Lancaster, on the west side of town near the Salem Center). I don't know if many of them count as "local NW flavor." Honestly, I don't know what I'd consider local flavor other than salmon. A few years ago there was a good restaurant that might qualify, but Google maps calls it Thai Orchid, so it's probably not there anymore. My best suggestion is to park downtown and walk around and see what you can find. There are some nice stores (local and chain) to check out in that area, too.

To me, local flavor would not really be found in Salem. Portland has some good German restaurants. Mo's in Newport is the place to go for seafood. Both of these are an hour away.

If my mother calls tonight, I'll ask her if she has any suggestions.

Are you taking the 5 or the 99 up from Fresno?

Most likely the 99 up to the 5. Always a problem around Sacramento, but we're hoping to leave before 6am.

Thanks. We figured salmon would be big. Fortunately, we both love salmon.

One more note (if it's not too late): I know you said you were looking for hole-in-the-wall places, but some of the best local restaurants in Salem are a bit nicer than that. AFAIK, the nice-looking restaurants downtown aren't pricey, and they have good food that would definitely count at local flavor.
