Yes, the wood grain of those shelves has been bugging me as well. It's a simple UV mistake that got past me that I have yet to correct.

In other news, I'm about to begin my art test for the job, which should take me 10 days. My second phone interview yesterday didn't go as good as I hoped, as the artists that were interviewing me seemed very skeptical of my capabilities since I have no industry experience or formal education in game art. It was a blow to my self-esteem, for sure. But the art test, whatever it is, will be my chance to alleviate their fears. I'm a little nervous because the test will most likely be to create an environment outside of my comfort zone of Star Trek/sci fi.

Dude, just email them a link to this thread!

If they still inexplicably think you're unqualified, or use that as an excuse when they see what you can really do and all of a sudden are afraid for their jobs, then you probably wouldn't want to work for/with them in the first place.

Just give it your best dude. It's obvious you have major talent, and you've certainly managed to get some attention with that! :techman:

Donny do your best with confidence. I think you'll do fine. These days it seems most people don't want anyone without experience. Makes it hard to get started. It was the same for me in my profession. And if not here then another one down the line. And when that happens it should be an open road for you when they see what you are capable of. You should be paid WELL to do this stuff. Best of luck. :)

That's the Devil's Paradox, isn't it? Can't get the job without experience, can't get the experience without a job? And anymore, you also have to have a degree in something. And not necessarily in what kind of job you're applying for.

@Donny - approach your art test with the same attention to detail, speed and excitement as you have here. Whatever happens, it is a good learning opportunity.

I'm doing my homework for the next few days before the art test, brushing up on industry standard techniques. Basically, I'm having to learn how to use less to accomplish more, since shipped games have to pay very close attention to memory usage. I tend to just go all out on my projects because I don't have a boss breathing down my neck. Instead of using 10 materials to texture a corridor, how can I do it with only two? Things like that.

I'm almost glad their skepticism was evident during the interview yesterday, as now I'm more aware of what I need to do to ace this test.

building a shelf with normally-oriented wood for strength, with one or more strips of vertically-grained wood glued to the face, would be a great way to mess with people in a library. :bolian:

Wow! Very nicely done. They did a good job getting all the pieces put together. Good detailing without sacrificing performance. It also quite effectively shows how much the E-D appears to have been inspired by a hotel. :D

I love that we finally got to see the main shuttlebay, which was only hinted at ("Best of Both Worlds II") and seen in miniature ("Cause & Effect"). Also a nice touch moving the starship models into the corridor between the Observation Lounge and the bridge, and adding the ring ship and NX-01.

I don't know if this will help any, but here's a thread from a "Knight Rider" forum with props from the show re-used in other films -- some of it might be used in the original TOS films. I don't know recall them well enough to know for sure:

That thing with the red buttons on either side of the yellow graph was also used in "V: The Final Battle" that the Starchild shut down. A lot of those same props were used (overused) in various 80's shows and movies. Remember the big long thing with the blinky rotating red tubes? Been in damn near every single science fiction show for two decades.
