Dominion War similarities with LOTR?

I've read about B5 having key similarities with Lord of the Rings, but I actually think there are a few parallels in DS9 as well.

Jem Hadar- Uruk Hai- Both are warrior species, bred for the sole purpose of combat.

Jadzia- Gandalf- Both die at a climactic moment in the story, and are resurrected (in a sense)

Dominion-Cardassia alliance-The Two Towers- Both universes have a deadly alliance between bitter enemies to crush the forces of good.

Is it just me? Anyone else think there are similar story elements there? Or is it just that Campbellian epics always have similar motifs?

Although I am a big fan of both DS9 and LOTR, I've never correlated the two. The points you mention are generic enough to apply to a lot of stories. I'm inclined to agree most with your last statement, basically that certain archetypes are common to many works of fiction.

The Jadzia and Gandalf connection is very vague. From what I remember of LotR Dax doesn't place nearly as an important role in the storyline as Gandalf does. Also Jadzia's death is not really a plot point created to benefit the story, it was done because the actress playing Jadzia was leaving the show. Also Star Trek has done a number of "resurrections" of characters over the years.

As for the enemy bred for war and the "unholy alliance", as said above they are fairly standard tv themes/plots.

I don't consider the Jem'Hadar the Uruk Hai... or Orks either... in part because weren't the latter elves that were messed with? Also, the things from LOTR seemed less programmed. And... the Uruk Hai wouldn't turn invisible, had bad teeth, and were gross and messy. And their space ships were terrible!
