Dogen was our best bet

Just realized something while going over Richard Alperts bio on wikipedia...he doesnt know shit.

When Esau/MiB explained that he took Locke's body because he was a candidate, Richard didn't know what he was talking about, yet when Hurley told Dogen to mind his own business and go back because he was a candidate, Dogen seemed to know exactly what that meant and complied.

There are other examples, but Dogen seemed like the best bet for getting information because he seemed to know a lot about Jacob, MiB, the island etc and he wasnt even immortal.

All this time I've been thinking Richard knows shit because he's so old and must have been there for awhile, but he was just jacobs errand boy.

I don't know. I think Richard must still know a lot. He's been there long enough.

He knew what seeing the "Ghosts" meant. When young Ben told him he had seen his mother, Richard sure knew what that was about.

Richard also knew all about the healing powers of the fountain and what it might do to someone who bathed in it.

He was fully involved in all of the recent Other's activities. He was there guy off Island, recruiting people and traveling about testing children, looking in to stuff, etc...

Back in the 1950's he seemed to be in charge of resisting the soldiers on the island. Everyone was listening to him back then. he's the one who made the decisions like allowing Faraday to check out the bomb, listening to Locke, deciding what was done with the prisoners, etc... In fact we still don't know who was the leader of the Other's at that time. We never saw who it was. We only saw young Widmore & Eloise, before they were the leaders of the Others.

He also must have known about the Lists and what they meant since he must have been the one giving them to Ben.

I think the scene you mention about him not knowing/understanding what NotLocke was talking about, was more of the fact he didn't know that the Smoke Monster could do what it had done. Take solid human form, kill Jacob, etc...

I think the situation is more along the lines that maybe Richard and Dogan thought that the Lists and the candidates were for the position as leader of the Others, not as replacements for Jacob. That is why Dogan still had to do whatever Hurley said, because he could be their new leader. Remember at that time (and currently) there is no leader of the Others. The Leader was Locke, but he's dead. And no knew leader has yet be chosen/taken over.

So it looks like there is going to be a few positions on the Island to fill if the heroes win the day.

Someone has to take over for Jacob.
Someone has to take over leading the Others.
Someone has to take over guarding/running the Temple.
I imagine, if he lives, that Richard will still stay on as the middleman between the new "Jacob" and the new leader of the Others.

Lets see...

Jack as the new Jacob.
Sawyer as the new leader of the Others.
Jin as the new guardian of the temple.

Well once he saw Locke's dead body (*sniff*) he clearly knew that some evil force was walking around as Locke so he knows about the Jacob/MIB battle at the least.

Jin as the new guardian of the temple.
Well, that's a bit typecasting/racist!:wtf:

Not intentionally.

To me, out of all of the main Losties, Jin seems to have the most grounded, sensible attitude and wouldn't mind staying in one place and running it while at the same time helping and protecting people. And if Sun was with him she could have her garden, etc... at the temple.

Jack is to driven to just hang out at the temple. He'd want to be out doing stuff.

Sawyer would get bored living there (although now that I think about it he did settle in quite well at Dharma and did protect the people there. But I think that was because they had beer and ovens and nice beds and running water. The temple probably wouldn't be his cup of tea.)

Kate is useless.

Hurley is to nice to command/lead a place like that.

Sayid is now evil.

Locke is dead.

Claire is insane.

So really, that only leaves Jin and Sun to handle the job.

yah Widmore obviously knows a lot, since he was smart enough to bring along a portable sonic fence.

As Ilana, well she seems to know some stuff, but she must have never been to the island before, since she didn't know Richard or Ben. So unless she is very old, older then Richard, and hasn't been back to the Island since before he came, then she's always been one of Jacob's off Island people. Maybe she only acted as his bodyguard when he went off Island? She does know that she has to protect the new candidates, but she doesn't know what they have to do or how to do it. What did she tell Sun? Something like, "if you are [his replacement] then you'll know what to do [next]."

That doesn't make it seem like she knows a lot that will be helpful, although she might be able to fill in some of the blanks about Jacob and his off Island activities. If they ever ask her about it.

I have a feeling a lot of things will be answered once we get Richard, Widmore, and NotLocke in a room together.

Maybe he's a LIARRR! Hiding behind a smile and understanding eyes. ;)

After all, he also told Sun that he watched Jin, Hugo, Jack and all DIE back in 1977. But they Didn't die and he wasn't there to see what Did happen. Unless there's another time trip in their relative future...

So maybe Richard really IS just making it up as he goes along, keeping his true knowledge to himself. He plays dumb so as to be underestimated by fandom until he's ready to pull out the awesome, haha.

Uhh but what Ji Yeon, Jin has yet to even meet his own daughter, assuming he even survives the rest of the show.

Get much exercise jumping to conclusions and throwing the race card??:rolleyes::rolleyes:

"Jumping to a conclusion" would be taking unrelated facts and putting them together to reach an unsubstantiated answer.

"Throwing the race card" would be showing an inordinate amount of outrage at the use of race to decide something.

Jin is a main character and Asian. Dogen was a main character(for a short time) and Asian.

Observing that one of three major Asian characters in the show should takeover the job of one of the other Asians might come off as a bit racist/typecasting.

Only if *you* choose to think that way. I swear, some of you people are so quick to throw the race card these days it isn't funny. You're the one "connecting the dots" by linking one Asian to the other and then screaming "RACIST"!

RoJoHen is correct -- most of you have no clue what racism actually is.

^well, if you think something being a "bit" that way is screaming, I can't help ya. It was a one line comment, not a raging, screaming tirade.

The only ones that seem to be "OMG! shocked!" are the ones saying it's not racist.

Every use of a word is not occasion to go into righteous indignation mode.

How sad that 30+ years after Dr Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, people are so quick to pass judgement on nationality and creed rather than content.
