Does STNG have the best sound in TV history?

STNG was nominated many times for its sound editing and mixing over the years. I've noticed that even watching it on modern equipment, it sounds better than modern shows currently airing. Its just very crisp and I never have to turn it up that loud, but I can still hear everything. The background noises really add life to the ship. So does it have the best TV sound ever??

Possibly, but then again most Trek in general is pretty good when it comes to sound. I was watching "O Who?" the other day. Some of the background Borg sounds used really do add a lot of atmosphere to the overall experience of the show.

I really like what Battlestar Galactica is doing Sound Design wise. Plus Lost has an excellent sound mix, especially considering how many beach scenes they shoot. Modern Star Trek though does have some very high quality audio. Its re-recording mixes in particular are very good and super clean. But I do find the Sound Design, like the music, to be bland for the most part, with a pretty limited dynamic range. Just my opinion, of course, and considering I've never seen an episode on DVD or with a decent sound system it's based on limited experiences.

A while back I found this article about sound designer Jim Wolvington and others involved in Star Treks post production audio, if anyone is interested. http://filmsound.org/studiosound/pp_startrek.html

I don't know if this is too much of a tangent, but I've noticed that almost universally all the shows early episodes had a lot of background crew chatter which would recede further and further into the background as the seasons progressed. This was most evident in TOS and TNG. Though it may have been for the better as the stock sound was usually obviously recycled dialogue.

I don't know much about sound editing, but TNG certainly has the best sound EFFECT in TV history: the classic "dee dee doo doo" doorbell! :D

It really does have some great sound. The background hum of the ship really seals the deal.

+1, especially on DVD and good speakers.

I was always impressed with the sound editing. Think about synching up all those control taps in the episodes...we take it for granted when we're just sitting there watching that those consoles actually make those sounds in real life!

I love the ambient ship noise because it's instantly recognizable as Star Trek even when the TV hasn't warmed up yet (old-school TV set) or when someone's flipping through channels.

Very, good, sound on TNG some of which many of as take for granted because they thay are part of our everyday life.
