Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel....

The Rock

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
....again in a Trek movie?

I'm not saying that it won't be a good movie. In fact, I think it will be quite enjoyable and probably one of the best Trek movies. But, even if it does turn out pretty well, doesn't it make you mad that once again the writers can't resist using time travel?

Now, I'm sure the audience that this movie is trying to appeal to (people who aren't really Trek fans) won't care that time travel is once again being used if 1) they like the movie and 2) it's a big hit with the casual movie audience.

But for us Trekkers (you [my furry little friend], me, all of us here in this milking message board), won't WE be frustrated that this will have been the third Trek movie to have time travel in it (the fourth if you count 'Generations' as a time travel movie)? Will that make you mad in a way? If it turns out to be a good movie and we enjoy the living hell out of it, will it make you jump for joy at the greatness of the movie while at the same time make you shake your fist at the heavens while cursing to the gods that time travel was once again used in a Trek flick?

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

I like time travel movies so I say bring it.

How is the end of 2008 by the way? Did we achieve world peace at least?
Time travel is the only way you could know for sure that time travel is in the movie, having already seen it on Dec 25, 2008 of course. ;)
I have a headache.

I'm pissed off that they didn't use time travel to get Gene Roddenberry to complain about the script and leak it to his fans.

Well, in a recent interview I think Nimoy mentioned that old Spock meets young Spock at some point in the movie. So unless it's some kind of weird sequence where Spock is meditating or something (which would be silly beyond words) then I guess it's safe to say at this point that time travel will be used. Besides, there's been a lot of talk that the Romulans in the movie are time travelers as well.

Also, I heard that the Borg once again travel back in time to stop Kirk from flying the maiden voyage of the 1701. (OK I just made that one up!) :p

What interview? If Nimoy said that someplace I'm sure we'd being talking about it in here. I think you might be recalling someone's guess for fact.

And considering AICN has been rather resoundly shot down I wouldn't take anything from them as being true.

Ah saying all that. Time travel doesn't bug me, less so since this an entire new production team in my mind they're free to work with whatever science fiction concept they care to. Now if Braga was on this film I might think otherwise.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

I agree that we should take ALL plot rumors so far with very large grains of salt. But I think the time travel element, while not being officially confirmed, seems fairly likely -- several sites have reported that their "sources" have unofficially confirmed at least that much. One of these is Trekmovie.com, which to date seems to be fairly well plugged-in:

TrekMovie.com has confirmed that elements of the original AICN rumor report are true (such as the inclusions of the Romulans and time-travel), however a source tells us that much of the original AICN story is still pure speculation.
Article here.

Of course, I could be completely and utterly wrong here. Which is fine too. As for me, I don't really mind one way or another, as long as the idea is executed well and entertainingly.

No. I don't get wound up about stupid shit like that, unlike a lot of the "fans" around here.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

As long as they movie is good I don't give 2 shits if it involves time travel.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Nope. Not pissed.

However, there's no confirmation there will be any time travel yet, so hey. But even if there was, so what, so long as it's done well?

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Why are people so bent out of shape over time travel??

Oh yeah.. "It's overdone.." That old chestnut. There are only so many plot devices one can use in sci-fi and TT is one of them. I don't think Trek has over used it. Used it poorly, yes, but not overused. It's all about the story and how it is served.

The one thing about time travel that is overdone is the bitching and moaning about it. That I can certainly do without.

The other thing to consider is that Time Travel is only a rumour at this point. I am not going to worry about the plot of this film until or unless something official is actually announced. For now I will keep my knickers loose and fancy free.

I have more important things to worry about: rent, work, bills, world peace, relationships, responsabilities, deadlines, etc. Whether or not Star Trek uses time travel to tell their story or not is pretty low on the totem pole at this point. All I want is an entertaining, compelling story to get excited about.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Time travel is a plot device. Like any other it can be used in good and bad ways. If it is poorly done in this film, I will be annoyed.

However, I will not simply be annoyed because they used time travel.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

I think it would be cool if Spock uses the orb thing from DS9, or he could find Dr. Sam Beckett and leap into himself, so when we se him it's nemoy, but when he looks into the mirror it's Quinto. That would also allow for a cameo of Scott Bakula without it being Archer. Seriously though it dosen't bother me as long as it's cool, makes since and dosen't screw up the time line

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

As long as they don't travel back to WW2 and have to fight Nazis, I'm cool with it. I am so sick of Nazis in sci-fi.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Time Travel is a Star Trek conceit.

As others have said, if done well then there is nothing wrong with it. Which would you prefer - time travel or another journey to the centre of the galaxy?

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Did I miss the part where it was ever confirmed there's Time Travel in this fim?

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

It is assumed, but not confirmed.

In truth, very little is confirmed at this point.

Yes, it was confirmed in the future and Austin 3:16 has just come back in time to let us know.

Also, he is looking for John Connor.

Monday nights on Fox would be a good place to start.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Maybe he just meets himself symbolicly..like he goes to Kirks Grave and sees himself younger
