Doctor Who: Unexpected
Tamsin Davis was bored. It had been a boring night, waiting in the TARDIS console room, while the Doctor was on his misguided attempt at 'fighting crime' in the American city they had landed in a few months ago. 'Maybe I'll go to the library,' she thought. If she had a book, she could pass the time more easily.

Tamsin returned to the console room a few minutes later, with a book on the history of the British States of Mars in the 23rd Century. The Doctor would be aghast at her reading about the relative near future, but it had piqued her curiosity.

However, as she entered the console room she noticed something odd. She looked around saw that the doors were open a crack. 'Odd,' she thought. She was sure that the Doctor had closed them when he had left at sunset. She went and closed them. “Wait,” she said. “Someone's here...” It wasn't the Doctor. It wasn't his style.
She looked and saw someone. She dropped the book in surprise. It was a younger girl, about fifteen, or sixteen dressed in very worn out clothes. Her blonde hair was all over the place. It was a mess. Tamsin could tell that she had been like that for a while. She was sitting next to the doors.“Tamsin,” she said, telling the girl her name.
The girl remained silent, but nodded.
“What's your name?”
The girl remained silent but shivered.
“Oh! You must be cold. Come, the TARDIS has a wardrobe, with all the warm clothes you could want.”
The young girl shook her head and rubbed her stomach.
“You're hungry?” Tamsin asked.
The girl nodded.
“The TARDIS also has a great pantry and kitchen.”

Five minutes later, Tamsin watched the girl gobble up the bacon and eggs that she had managed to make.

“Wow, you must be very hungry!” she said.

The girl quickly finished the meal and nodded. She went to the sink and filled a cup with water, and drank it. She then had another drink.

“Thirsty too?”
The other girl nodded.

Tamsin left the girl in the bathroom, where she was bathing and headed back to the console room. One question went through her mind; how was she going to tell the Doctor about the girl?

She checked the time when she sat back down at the console. Nearly sunrise, the Doctor would be coming back. And sure enough, the doors opened as they respended to the click of his fingers. He entered, busy eyebrows and all.

“A productive night,” he said. Several Meth labs destroyed with minimal collateral damage.”

“That's good,” Tamsin said.

However he knew that something was up. “Something's wrong.”

“We're not alone on the TARDIS.”

“What?”

Tamsin then explained about the girl.

The Doctor listened to what Tamsin had to say.

“I can't take in the homeless everywhere I go. I am not a social worker! I have no idea how to help them.”

“Both of us together, can help this one girl,” Tamsin said.

The Doctor thought for a moment. “Not exactly a safe environment. The TARDIS itself is safe, but we're still in her home city...” he paused, as if listening to the TARDIS. “So, that's it old girl. You let her in, so that I would leave the city.”

“Cool. I was getting bored, sitting by the scanner every night.”

“I could tell,” the Doctor said.

The young girl had finished bathing and had dressed in the clean clothes that Tamsin had found in a basket next to the bath. She was brushing her hair when the two approached. She was having difficulty with the knots. When she caught sight of the Doctor, she looked frightened, and dropped the hairbrush. She still didn't vocalise...
“It's OK. The Doctor won't hurt you,” Tamsin said as she approached.
The girl was still frightened. She buried her face against Tamsin's torso. Her hair fell over her face. 'Great!' Tamsin thought as she began stroking the girl on her head. 'It seem's I'm her new parental figure!'
“I think I would have to stay with her if we are going to take her with us,” Tamsin said.
The girl looked up to Tamsin with a pleading expression. She reached up and played with a lock of short blonde hair.

“The decision has been made,” the Doctor said.

“Good,” Tamsin said. She looked back to the girl. “But what is your name? I have to call you something.”

The girl's lips parted but nothing came out. She shook her head.

“You will have to choose,” the Doctor said to Tamsin. “Come, I'll show you how the TARDIS works.”

The girl held on to Tamsin harder.

“I'll keep my distance.”

As they walked back to the console room, Tamsin took guesses at the girl's name. “Kira?” shake of head. “Laura?” “Mara?” “Naomi?” “Olivia?” “Penny?” “Quinn?” “Robyn?” “Samara?” “Tiffany?” “Una?” “Wendy?” “Xena?”

“Xena?” the Doctor asked.

“Something to start with X...” “Yolanda?” “Zara?” “Amanda?” “Brittany?” “Clarissa?” “Diana?” “Elizabeth?” “Fiona?” “Gwen?” “Helen?” “Ina?” “Jane?” “Karina?” “Lorelle?”

“Are you just going to go around and around the alphabet like that?” The Doctor asked as they entered the Console Room.

Tamsin thought. “Probably not very effective,” she finally said.

The Doctor went up to the console. “One reason I wasn't going to leave her behind. The homeless in this city are exploited by the crime lords. Like Oliver Twist, but a lot worse.”

Tamsin nodded. She looked down and saw the girl nodding too. 'So she has read Oliver Twist?' she wondered.

“As to where to go, that's up to the TARDIS,” the Doctor said. He then input instructions into the console and set the TARDIS in motion. “There, the city is behind you! I hope we're going somewhere where we can get you help.”

The girl weakly nodded and continued to cling to Tamsin. 'This is going to be very challenging,' Tamsin thought.
