Doctor Who
Survival of the DoctorDonna
They had left the alternate Darlig Ulv Stranden, and had returned to their home universe. “I thought we could try the planet Felspoon,” Donna said. “Just because. What a good name, Felspoon. Apparently, it's got moutains that sway in the breeze. Moutains that move. Can you imagine?”
The Doctor was concerned. “And how do you know that?”
“Because it's in your head. And if it's in your head, it's in mine.”
“And how does that feel?” The Doctor asked.
“Brillant! Fantastic! Molto Bene! Great big universe, packed into my brain. You know you could fix that chameleon circuit if you just tried hotbinding the fragment links and superseding the binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary binary,” Donna then gasped. “I'm fine. Nah, never mind Felspoon. You know who I'd like to meet? Charlie Chaplin. I bet he's great, Charlie Chaplin. Shall we do that? Shall we go and see Charlie Chaplin? Shall we? Charlie Chester. Charlie Brown.” Donna realised something. “No he's fiction. Friction, fiction, fixing mixing. Rickston. Brixton.”
Then there was another attack, and Donna blasphemed.
“Do you know what's happening?” The Doctor asked. He was sure Donna knew what was happening, what needed to happen.
“Yeah,” Donna answered.
“There's never been a Human Time Lord metacrisis before now. And you know why.
“Because there can't be. I want to stay!” She turned away.
“Look at me, Donna, look at me.”
“I was going to be with you forever,” Donna said, with tears.
“I know,” the Doctor said, trying to be reassurring.
“The rest of my life, travelling in the TARDIS. The DoctorDonna. No!” She said vehmently. “I can't go back. Don't make me go back! Doctor, please, please don't make me go back!” Donna backed away from the Doctor.
“Donna. Oh Donna Noble. I am so sorry. But we had the best of times.
“No!” Donna said, she moved away from the Doctor, towards the console.
“The Best, Donna. Goodbye.”
“No!” Donna said as the Doctor reached out towards her temples. She it several buttons on the console, changing the TARDIS's course.
The Doctor was knocked to the floor. “DONNA!” he cried out. He could hear the rhythm of the time ship. She didn't want Donna to die either.
“You're not getting rid of me that easily space-man!” Donna said. “Now, to land somewhere...”
“No! You're going to die, Donna! Is that what you want?”
“Of course not! I'll figure out a way.”
“There is no way!” the Doctor said as he clambered up. Donna still kept her distance.
“No!”
The Doctor leapt for it, grabbed her hand. “Let me save you!”
“By wiping my memories of you? That's not saving me!” Donna tried to run again, but the TARDIS lurched, forcing her into the Doctor's arms.
“Now!” The Doctor said. He put his hands at her temples.
“No!” Donna said.
The Doctor tried to enter Donna's mind, but found his way blocked. Donna had figured out a way to block his access to her memories. “Donna! Drop the sheilds!”
“No!” Donna objected. She was being stubborn to the last, it appeared. The Doctor tried again, but this time, Donna's defenses caused some mental feedback, knocking him out.
The Doctor was knocked out. Mental feedback. He'd be fine, what with the recent regeneration and everything. The DoctorDonna thought on the matter. Maybe that was the answer, regeneration. Sure, in a way, the Donna everyone knew would be gone, but really, she was really just a temp from Chiswick who had met an extraordinary person. Her memories would live on. The new DoctorDonna would be better. She input a destination into the TARDIS controls. The timeship reluctantly obeyed.
The TARDIS materialised, the DoctorDonna dragged the Doctor out. She looked at her hands, the golden energy was already there, She dashed back into the TARDIS, and took off, leaving the Doctor on the beach at Darlig Ulv Stranden.
The DoctorDonna was safely in the vortex. She began to regenerate...
The Doctor came to. Sand! Wait, there was no sand in the console room! He clambered to his feet and looked around. Darlig Ulv Stranden, the Darlig Ulv Stranden of his universe. The suicidal DoctorDonna at least had a sense of irony. Donna! She was gone. Wherever she had taken the TARDIS she would have died a painful death, alone. If she had taken her into the past, he would find wherever she ended up. If in the future... It would have to be the slow path, or hitching a ride with one of his past selves...
He didn't relish that latter prospect.
He began to walk away. He had to get somewhere else, somewhere less remote.
The Doctor had got off the sand when he heard the sound of the TARDIS engines. He supposed the DoctorDonna could have sent her back?
Immediately he clicked his fingers, the way that River Song back at the Library had described.
The doors opened. “Impossible!” he said.
“Impossible Donna! I like that,” the young blonde haired lady said. “Come in Space-man! We have travelling to do!”
The Doctor entered the TARDIS. “Donna wouldn't have been able to regenerate!” he said. “Who are you?”
“Donna!”
“A metacrisis doesn't cause a human to regenerate?”
“How do you know? I was the first.”
“Say something only Donna would know.”
“Remember, Pompeii...” She began.
“You are Donna!” the Doctor said with a smile once she had finished. He set the TARDIS in motion leaving Darlig Ulv Stranden behind for the last time.
