I am taking a reseach seminar in European history after 1789 that centers on around the theme of “a history of modern objects." According to the course syllabus " Most generally, one can think of this as a history of how objects gain significance. Why and how do inert things become objects of interpretation, complaint, or curiosity? As Lorraine Daston states,“things become talkative when they fuse matter and meaning.” What values and meanings of a particular socio‐cultural context allow things to become objects ofinquiry?"
I am thinking about writing how Doctor Who, as an object, became a popular show in Europe and how/why the show has endured to become the longest running science fiction program.
I am in the United States and our university library is not geared too much toward European history. I wanted to ask this "Doctor Who Community" for assistance in finding articles, news paper accounts, etc to help write this paper. Any aid is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED and comments are always welcome.
I just thought of this topic today in class as we discussed the syllabus so it is very new. I hope to fine-tune the idea in the days and weeks to come. Thank you.
