Doctor Who IDW comics: There's an app for that!

The AppStore has a new free app featuring Doctor Who comics from IDW. It also comes with 3 free issues. It's pretty cool, I must say.

Doctor Who IDW comics app

I have read the first issue featuring the 11th Doctor, Amy & Rory, and it was pretty good. Artwork is quite excellent.

I've read the first two issues and thought the artwork was terrible in the second. The first issue was spectacular though, both story and art. The Doctor actually looks like Matt.

^ Yeah, I'm reading the 2nd issue now, and the art isn't as good as the first, though the likenesses are still pretty good.

It's still pretty cool that you can turn your device horizontally and read the comics panel by panel.

I thought the artwork in the second issue was excellent. It's Richard Piers Rayner! He drew Road to Perdition! :)

He's also incredibly slow...., which is why the third issue is drawn by a fill-in artist.

I just got The Forgotten miniseries on the IDW app. I'm on issue 2 right now. Any other DW comics I should pick up? Anyone know if the Torchwood comics will also be available?

Torchwood is a different license and a different publisher. So, no, they won't be available.

Try The Whispering Gallery -- a Ten/Martha story by Leah Moore and John Reppion, with art by Ben Templesmith. The artwork is typical Templesmith moody, and the story packs some emotional punch.

^ I got that one on your recommendation and enjoyed it. I liked how the rendering of Ten & Martha's characters ranged from being almost abstract figures in some panels to almost photo-realistic in others. I wouldn't be surprised if in the latter case actual frame grabs were incorporated into the art.

I have to wait a few more hours to get my copy :) Got it and enjoyed it more than I did the first part. I wonder if the shape changing lizard is a homage to David Icke :)

I was a bit put off by the part in issue 2, but issue 3 seems a lot better. Fortunately, IDW seems to be using different artists for different story arcs, so when the Jack the Ripper story ends we'll have another artist give it a go. And there's also the Fairytale Life miniseries coming up this month with a different creative crew altogether.

As for the app, I don't mind seeing the Doctor Who comic expand its distribution, just so long as the print version - which I prefer, both as a reader and as a (non-slabbing) comic book collector - remains available.
