Doctor Who will return for a sixth series in 2011, it has been confirmed.Executive producer Piers Wenger also announced a Christmas special for this year, penned by showrunner Steven Moffat.
Matt Smith will be returning for his second full series as The Doctor.
Shooting on the special and the 13-episode sixth run will begin early July in Cardiff. Filming on the fifth series wraps this Saturday ahead of transmission on BBC One at Easter

interesting that she is not mentioned, maybe some of those romours ive read are true, maybe Matt Smiths next companion is River Song

This is good news. What are we going to call Series 6 then? Series George?

To date no one official outside Moffat (and DWM) has called the upcoming series Series 5; so hopefully that joke will have died by next year.

And speaking of DWM, Piers Wenger actually confirmed Series 6 in the most recent issue which came out two weeks ago but not many people seemed to notice!

forgive me if this seems kinda out there, and bordering on crazy, but how about we call it Series 6, instead of some in-joke name that only a dozen other people will ever understand, and even then 10 of them will be ashamed of the fact they understood it.

I hope that my suggestion has not blown any bodys mind, if it has you can send the cleaning bills to me, I believe you all know my address ;)

It's Series 2 for me

Piers Wenger on ep 1: "it's Independence Day on the village green."
Just confirmed: Doctor Who back for sixth series and Xmas special. More soon..
Also confirmed: cybermen back in new series
Hmm judging from the last 9 months or so there hasn't been any set pictures of cybermen on set.

I'm going to guess they'll be in the finale or they were super secretive.

Or it means they'll be in the Xmas special or series 6?

Then again, Moffat is apparently a fan of the "sneaky, secretive" Cybes, so...

I had this theroy last year that when Donna remembered her time with The Doctor that it would lead to her regenerating into Amy Pond. I still like this theroy, so may I suggest that this is ultamatly what happens to Amy Pond. Amy Pond = River Song, Coincidence??

This is cool news.

Hopefully no RTD shit-bash of a christmas ep. Although, the Christmas Invasion and The Next Doctor are the two best specials he has done next to the three part finale. Still not perfect, but hey, im not picky.:techman:

A Christmas special could be cool, but hopefully not like the others where the companion is absent for some reason, or as Karen isnt mentioned, in between companions. :( Hopefully not.

but we all knew The Doctor was coming back, didnt we? Hey?;)

If it turns out to be true I'm glad the chain will be broken for new WHO

One cast member stays behind while another leaves

I didn't mind it happening earlier because the three occasions worked. Rose broke the Doctor's heart, Martha left because she couldn't reach him, and Donna was just unlucky.

But the show needs a little stability now for a bit. No one should expect anyone on DW to stay on for, say, 7 years -- Tom Baker was a fluke and arguably overstayed by a couple years anyway -- but if we get two quality seasons of the Smith-Gillan team that would be fantastic. I've only seen those trailer snippets, but you can tell they have chemistry from the interviews.

(Anyone taking pool bets on how long before the tabloids suggest behind the scenes TARDIS hanky panky?)

Next weeks headline

"WHO is that?! Smith exits Gillians flat!!!"

They seem pretty close(9 months working together will do that)

But she sees Smith as an annoying older brother

Gillan said her on-screen partner would win over fans and silence those who’ve raised eyebrows about choosing a relatively unknown young actor.
“What Matt’s done is something completely incredible”, she said. “He’s completely made the part his own and I think people really are going to fall in love with his Doctor.”
The Inverness-born actress said that Smith is a bit of a joker on set and “like an annoying older brother – but annoying in a brilliant way.”

Wow, how awesome is it that we're getting so many stories from Moffat this year? I can't wait to see what one of his Christmas specials will be like.

2) they seemed not 100% with it

A little bit of the pre press Guinness beforehand? Maybe to calm some nerves down

Moffat describes the Christmas special as “the most Christmassy Christmas special that there will ever be”.

^For once I'd actually like a christmas special that didn't actually involve Christmas. "Oh, look Amy, it's Christmas!". Why does it need to be Christmas? apart from the robot Santas and the various xmas tree killing machines (which could all have been replaced by something else less corny) there is absolutely no reason to set the special at christmas apart from making the viewers feel like it's happening there and then. And if it's just to carry on a running joke of "aliens always come at Christmas", well that's stupid as well.
