Do you, would you hike alone?

Recently an Australian minister was rescued after being missing in the bush for two days. He had accidently slipped down an icy slope and at the bottom found that he was in thick bush and he had to climb out to reach a more prominent position where he could be spotted (he realised that there would be a search started for him).

He is being criticised for going hiking alone and for not taking an emergency beacon with him.

So I am asking people here - do you or would you ever going hiking alone? If you have do you take a beacon with you?

If I ever went hiking alone, it would be during a time of year when icy slopes would not be present. Honestly, though, I don't know if I would ever do something like that. Hell, I freak out when I go for bike rides that I'm going to get a flat tire!

I do it all the time, up in the Blue Hills; but that's not very far from civilization.

Although if I did fall down and hurt myself, it's very possible that I could be missing for a long time.

Do you, would you, hike Alone?
Would you do it on the phone?
Would you hike there with your clone?
Or maybe give your dog a bone,
to hike from Madrid to Cologne?
Would you could you hike to Rome?
Why would you hike so far from home?
That you would hike out on your own?
Maybe you should hike to Nome,
that is if you would, you do hike alone.

Hiking is fun, but it makes sense to bring one like-minded person with you.

Me too, I try to hike on a weekly basis at the most and twice a month at the very least and I like to go alone....and ya know why? Because I can do whatever hike I want and for however long I like and I don't have to tailor it to the other person...or hear complaining and bitching about it. So I take my dog and never a peep outta her.

There is something to be said for hiking alone and safety...but statistically you should be aiiight.

I always take someone along when hiking. Someone I can run faster than. In case we should encounter any hungry bears. :D

Seriously? Eight responses and we've yet to see an obligatory and highly distasteful "Mark-Sanford-hiking-the-Appalachian-Trail" joke?

Congrats! :techman:

I have hiked alone, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I just like to be alone with my thoughts in a quiet setting.

I prefer hiking alone on the rare occasions when I go; I just don't take stupid risks that could get me into trouble and take a cell phone, flare gun or air horn or something to call for help.

One of the reasons I don't go hiking around here isn't because I'm worried about falling or anything, but because its not really safe to go wandering around the woods by yourself because you're certain NOT to be the only one out there, and going with other people isn't particularly appealing to me; if I'm going to walk around with others, I might as well just walk around town.

I'd recommend hiking alone to all women who wanted to kidnapped, murdered and raped (not necessarily in that order).

Don't bet your dog or supposed self-defense training saving you. That woman in Georgia had both and still lost her head...literally. :(

What an ugly world.

^ So we're supposed to live in fear and stay home because you men like to rape, kill and murder? I'm living my life and I'm not letting fear stop me. Statistically I should be alright..and if not than I died doing something I loved to do.

Do you remember Megamania for Atari?

I'm not a big fan of being in the outdoors like myself. It's more fun to share your surrounding with someone else.

I might trek a little bit into the woods to read a book though.

Yes, I do. But only around my hometown, which is hardly the deep woods. Lots of places to hike, but pretty safe.

Considering I just hiked a portion of Hadrian's Wall by myself, yes. However, it tends to be in reasonably well trafficked areas, and with my cell phone. I feel safe on my own, but try not to be stupid.

yeah sometimes I hike on my own walked across the Yorkshire moors, it was good to have a bit of time to myself without any distractions

Men are more likely to be victims of violence from strangers than women, and I suspect that both men and women are more likely to die from an accident whilst hiking than foul play.
