does anyone else agree that tom welling should have gotten a chance to be superman in the new film i mean i was a little dissapointed cause he played clark kent for so long and he even said in a interview he was open to playing superman in a movie.
heck chris reeve even liked him and passed the torch to tom.

No, I don't. Welling is a mediocre actor, and that's being generous. And seriously, WTF with all the Superman tv\movie threads?

I kinda do cause I liked SMALLVILLE...but I really don't care.

he played the same character for over a decade . . . let him do something else for a change

I think Tom Welling and Erica Durance should have been Superman and Lois in the LAST film. Of course, ANYBOY but that Chris Reeve clone Routh, and Kate Bostwick (What were they thinking on THAT one?) would have been better.

Better yet, bring back Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.

There should be an "I don't really care" button... I voted no, but not because of Welling himself, but because of the universe created by Smallville... The show was ok, and Welling was fine, but I just think Superman of the movies should be more in line with the established comic book storyline, or that of the original movies... I don't mind a reboot, THAT much, as it's been many years since there was an "origin" movie.

Routh's movie was a loose continuation.. Well, maybe not THAT loose, but it tried to stay true to the spirit and intent of the Reeve movies. Routh was not a clone of Reeve, his character was. I think he was great in the roll and would have liked to see him back.

I think Welling or hell, even Cain should have had a shot at testing for the roll if they had wanted it, just like any other actor could have. But Caville is what's happening now, so so be it.

nah...

he's done his run as 'superboy'... i don't honestly see him pulling of Superman properly anyway... even in the last episode wearing the suit, he still looked like Superboy dressing up lol

No, for one main reason: the movie would have to be a continuation of Smallville. But Smallville wasn't the Superman story. It was a reimagining, a new variation on Superboy tale. Had DC done it as a comic it would have been part of Elseworlds. If they'd cast Welling for the movie, then they'd be hogtied into following the Smallville continuity, rather than either establishing their own, following on from the Reeve films continuity as Superman Returns did, or doing something more closely connected to the comic books.

Also, I think Tom Welling is too old for the part. The big irony about Smallville being about "Superboy" is that by the time it ended, and Welling's Clark Kent finally got to be Super"man" (or Super-anything), he was already considerably older than Chris Reeve was when he made his first Superman movie. One reason why we see young guys cast in these roles (like Routh in Superman Returns) is if the film becomes a franchise they don't want to have a guy pushing 40 wearing the tights if another Superman film is made a few years down the line. George Reeves got away with playing Superman in his early 40s, but that was the 1950s when Superman was considered a father figure to children.

Welling had a great run and will stand as the actor with the longest tenure as Clark Kent for some time to come. But for the movies they need to start fresh with a new guy if they're not planning to do a remake of the TV show. It's best for Welling anyway because the guy has 10 years of typecasting to fight as it is.

Tom Welling is only 34, he could play the part, and I wouldn't have minded him doing it. However, since he said no, my yes vote is only a wish.

Didn't Welling's contract stipulate that he would never wear the Superman outfit in the course of the show? I wouldn't see that changing for the screen. Although if he were offered enough money he might change his mind.

Assuming Smallville continuity even allows for the existence of Superman in the first place, or if it leads to something completely different.

I am too lazy to dig it up...but Tom Welling said he would be open to playing Superman in a film...but he said it wasn't up to him. :)

Welling wore the costume in the last episode, and flew as Superman happily...

it did lead to Superman of sorts lol
