Do you still buy music on CD?

I still buy CDs 99% of the time, and if I download from iTunes, I usually immediately make a copy of the music on CD for the car. I'm just kind of a dinosaur that way.

Im buying the music and I have every right to make copies for myself and back them up. This way when my computer takes a shit I can just go to my closet (where I keep my cds) and re-up it to my computer.

Not that the concept itself is funny (since it's such a pain the ass), but I really like the phrase "my computer takes a shit" as a metaphor for a hard drive crash. :D

I do this because I like having the physical media as the ultimate backup - I am sure that there are situations where both one's computer and iPod can be damaged.

There are many situations in which your CDs can be scratched, lost, or otherwise rendered useless too.

The way I store them, that would be rather unlikely. I throw away the box and put them in a 'sleeve' which is then immediately stashed in a closet. Unless my house gets flattened by a space rock or something, nothing can happen to the CDs after that. :p

Ease of backup is a strength of electronic media. One can distribute a dozen copies of an electronic collection around the globe such that nothing short of the apocalypse is going to kill it in less time and with less effort than is required to duplicate a CD collection once.

Perhaps. And like I said, I always have my music on my computer *and* my iPod, and it's unlikely that something could happen to both. My preference for CDs is admittedly more towards the "I can re-rip if a better codec comes along" - especially since songs bought from the iTunes Store are at what I consider an unacceptably low bitrate (unless you're lucky enough to find your preferred tracks as 'iTunes Plus'), and those on the Amazon store are MP3s, which have been pretty much subsumed by AAC. If I wasn't concerned about that, I *might* throw away the CDs themselves. But why give the RIAA any ammo?

I buy downloaded music exclusively. Then I burn it to CD, delete the download, then rip the CD. This eliminates DRM and creates a back up. I win.

I still buy most of my stuff on CD, although I get more online these days than I used to (mainly through eMusic). Everything gets ripped into MP3 or AAC to go into iTunes as soon as it gets home, but I do prefer to have the media on hand in case the worst does happen and my media PC goes belly up (and I like to have the sleeve notes to hand).

I buy everything on CD.. Period.. Not that I have anything against downloading, I just see no need or reason to.

I do have to admit that I buy very few CD's anyway, so it's not like I'm spending tons of cash...
