Do you read through the thread before posting?

I have noticed that it seems like some do not read through a given post before posting...do you read through, or just post to the topic or look at the last few posts?... :)

Yes (or eventually if the thread question/poll is targeted to the individual, where I'll go back and read the other posts later after posting).

Depends on the thread.

What was the question?

I don't know, but I was starting to wonder if anyone read through a whole thread before posting on it, or if they just read the topic or the last few posts and responded based on that.

If the thread has stayed on topic, yes. Most of the time though I just check the last page or so and find that the topic has strayed.

I like to throw a dart at my computer screen and whatever post it hits, that's the one I reply to.

Now, T, we both know better than that...any thread you reply to contains your thoughtful comment and wonderful wit... :)

Most of the time? No. A thread is never more than the last four or five posts.

But even at the eventuality that you repeat what has already been said, missed someone who has agreed with you, or, before the thread went off the rails, posts you might have missed that were on target and that you could be simpatico with....??? :)

...interesting...so far, there is anything but a majority that read through the posts before posting...does that imply that you need to get into a thread early, or your posts might be missed?...I am not referring to the "5 word" or "describe in one word" or other threads like that... :)

As previously stated, it depends. If a thread is on page 12 when I join in, it's unlikely I've read the whole thing, I'll back up a half dozen posts to get with the current discussion.

Often by that point what's being discussed has little to do with the original theme anyway.

:)

It depends. If the thread is of particular interest to me I'll probably read the whole thing regardless. If it's not necessarily of strong interest, and especially if there's multiple pages of posts, I may very well read the first few and last few and skip the middle.

For me, it depends on a few things:
1 - How old a Thread is
2 - How many Pages a Thread is

Usually, I read the entire first page or two and the last page.
But lets say that Post #8 has some info wrong or asks a question, even it it isn't directed at someone specifically, I'll qote it, answer it, then go back to where I was in the Thread. When this happens, is where you seee me have a few posts in a hort timeframe, because I see something else that needs to be addressed.

I try to read the whole thread to see whether I can contribute or whether someone else has already contributed what I wanted to say.

If it's an older thread with dozens of pages (like those dealing with the TOS Enterprise) I tend to stop for the illustrations to see if something new came up or not.

The one thing I'd like to see would be a Trek BBS archive storing certain topics. Often a new poster isn't aware of previous threads, starts a new one and we all post the same arguments again which we've already posted a couple of times in other threads.

Personally, I'd rather like to see old threads revisited (but then it's the new poster who has to read through the bulk of several pages...).
