Do you MULTI-TASK?

And, no, I don't mean at work; I mean at home. My wife has been so kind to let me set up my own alcove in our house. I have my computers, a TV, my new $3000 yamaha music rack..its all there.

And there are times when I'll be: posting a new part of my fanfic--playing some Star Trek Armada (im an old fart) watching TV (currently the Olympics (sorry my canadian friends for that hockey smackdown) writing a song and watching my son play legos on his desk next to mine...and it all gets done.

What kind of 'fun' multi-tasking do you like to do in your spare time?

Sounds like you HAVE to multi-task - you've got a lot going on! Are you a mom? ;)

LOL...no. But I have learned to 'maximize' the time that my wife will let me do those things. Because, if you're married, you know that when your wife wants to do something (shopping...watch a tv show...sex ) you drop what you're doing like a trained dog and..well..scamper to her calling voice.

So, most of my at home multi-tasking is usually because I don't know when I'll be able to do those things again...

Unless drinking a glass of wine while cooking dinner counts, I'm not a very good multi-tasker. I'm much better at compartmentalizing the things I need to get done, and checking them off one-by-one.

All the time.

For example, I like watching TV while surfing the Internet. Does cleaning the house while also dancing count? :p

Recent research in the UK has shown that multi-tasking is a myth. The brain can only concentrate on one thing at a time, so it prioritises. It can switch between tasks quickly but it can't look at more than one thing at any given time.

Multi-tasking is a way of life. It amazes me that some people don't do it. To me, it's very simple. Doing laundry, cleaning and talking on the phone at the same time? No problem.

Your wife's a lucky woman - you sound very well trained up! ;)

I am not one of those people who can multi-task well. If my attention is divided between two things I feel like I am only giving half my attention to each thing, thereby diminishing the experience.

I'm also just kind of bad at it. For example, when I used to play WoW, I couldn't listen to MP3s at the same time, the MP3s would distract me and my level of play would go wayyyyy down.

Well, it's definitely not the sort of (allegedly fun) "multi-tasking" I've, um, been told appears in certain corners of the Internet, no.... :alienblush:

I find I thought I could multitask, but ultimately I learned what Star Trek had taught me for quite a while:

Miles O'Brien said:
My mother taught me, if you try to combine talking and eating, you'll end up doing neither very well.

Yeah. But I try to not watch TV and post on here for example at the same time. Doesn't make for good of anything.

I multi-task all the time, but it's not what I'd call fun. It's necessity.

Every night, I do laundry, make dinner, watch TV and clean the kitchen all at the same time. Some days, I'll wash my hair and clean the shower at the same time. On the internet, I listen to music, read the BBS, pay bills and answer emails and play San Juan in the background, but only if I'm in a time crunch. Not a problem now, as I have more free time than I want.

I think it's true about what was said above. We can all attempt more than one thing at the same time, but to truly "multitask" is to give each task we do the same 100% effort and attention as we would do if we were only doing one task. And that is something I can't do.
