I ran across this interesting story today: Pretty uncanny photos, IMHO Its incredible how much alike those people look.
Doppelganger theory. What I find really spooky is the number of couples who look alike. Talk about narcissism.
A few of the pairs were incredibly alike. But I don't think the others would've looked alike if they hadn't been dressed/styled to match.
Well, most of those couples look similar enough that it's easy to believe they might be related—some maybe even immediate family—but none look like identical twins. When you start paying attention to eyebrows, noses, eyes, chins, lips, and not so much to cosmetic things like hairstyles, glasses, or the clothing they're wearing, the differences become pretty apparent.
I've never met the individual(s) in question, but I do know the first name of my "twin" in my city because of a lady at the deli who has called me this woman's name repeatedly despite my trying to tell her my name. The name is uncommon enough that if I had enough time on my hands, I could probably find a pic or something on the Internet to see if it's actually true.
I apparently had a local twin when I was living in Cambridge, though I never met him. Several different people mistook me for the same guy, who apparently frequented one of the churches. I joked that I was tempted to call him my evil twin, but since he was a regular churchgoer that probably means I'm the evil one...
I've been mistaken for John Hodgman twice - once by a complete stranger on the street, and once by someone I'd known for several years (so in that case, it would probably be more accurate to say that she mistook him for me). Personally, I don't see the resemblance. (Apparently it's more prominent when I'm wearing my glasses, but in the only picture I seem to have in which I'm wearing them, I also have long hair, so posting it to invite opinions would probably not be much use.) I've also been told that I resemble John Simm, so a few years ago, during a "Celebrity Doppelganger" week on Facebook, I used a picture of him as my profile picture. An old high school friend messaged me to ask if I'd lost weight.
Maybe we do. Back in my hometown, I've had many different people tell me that there is a woman around my age that looks a lot like myself. People actually go and say "hi" to her thinking it is me! I've never seen her though... Last time I heard about her, they told me she has a baby (I don't) so she confused the hell out of my acquaintance...
It's weird - every so once in a while, I have someone come up to me and call me by someone else's name, or ask me if I'm such-and-so's brother or husband. There was a stretch there back in he previous decade where that happened quite a bit. There must be several people out there that I have at least a passing resemblance to, so I would think it's probably a lot more common than most people think.
My cousin and I look a lot alike. His mother once mistook me for him. As for non-relatives, probably. I'm a pretty common type.
