Do they have beer and pizza in the future?

Shat Happens

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
in ST4 Kirk doesn't know how to order food and drinks when dining with Gillian, and makes a face upon tasting the beer.

That's Shatner's "I just drank an exotic liquid" face. He does the same thing after tasting the Romulan Ale in TWOK.

Wonder if the beer gave him the runs? There are probably chemicals in there that are no longer used in the 23rd Century.

Admiral Morrow bought him some sort of alcoholic beverage (which he didn't touch) for their meeting in the officer's lounge in TSFS.

And synthihol replaced alcoholic beverages (for officers), as per the comment in the Scotty episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", which means alcohol does indeed still exist.

It may simply be that Kirk rarely if ever drank alcohol, being an officer and at a young age, which even in the TOS time may have been not permitted when on duty. On rare occassions it may have been good wine or some refined futuristic beer, so tasting some old-fashioned beer may have been a shock to his taste buds.

Or Bill farted and was smelling it right at that moment during shooting.

We see beer occasionally, I can't remember if pizza is shown. But they never give a "whats that?" face when someone mentions either, so apparently they still have it.

I can't imagine a future without Pizzaria's and huge beer celebrations. People just wouldn't let it happen.

Uhura orders a Budweiser in Star Trek '09, and while it's an alternate universe, I'm sure Bud exists in the Prime universe too.

Captain Kirk was a man of the swinging sixties, so of course he was familiar with alcohol. He was seen drinking on several occasions in TOS and the TOS movies. He was probably just unaccustomed to twentieth-century mass-produced swill like Michelob. :ack:

And pizza has been mentioned a number of times in Trek.

The idea of a thin flatbread baked with stuff on top of it is centuries old, so it's hard to imagine that it would completely go away by the 23rd/24th centuries.

I would think beer exists in thev23d century, but it is not Kirk's drink of choice. Pizza may be the same for him, growing up on a farm.

Where was it mentioned that (prime) Kirk grew up on a farm?

I'm not sure it ever was. As far as I know, he just said he was from Iowa.

I'm guessing that, even today, not everybody from Iowa grew up on a farm. Let alone in the 23rd century. :)

(Picard on the other hand . . . .)

The idea of Kirk's family living on a farm came from the novels. In turn, that was integrated into NuKirk's backstory in the JJ movies, including the names of Kirk's parents.

Kirk drank plenty and while on duty in the original STAR TREK. Bones and him would often have heart-to-hearts about command over a drink. In fact, on those occasions, it was often Bones who brought the booze with him.

I'm just tickled that Pizza has an entry on Memory Alpha.

I was rewatching the first part of "The Menagerie" last night, and I was reminded all over again how the Pike/Boyce scene in Pike's cabin is basically just a proto-Kirk/Bones scene ("Who wants a warm martini?").
