Divide in the fandom = fiction?

It's nothing but internet dick measuring. The more you can hate on a something for violating the canon, the more you get to show off that you know such obscure canon. Thus, you are perceived to have a bigger internet dick.

I have a few nitpicks about the movie. Really my biggest beef is that the bridge looks like an Apple store. But I think it's better to wait for the stupid thing to get released.

Fandom isn't one collective with the same thought, despite the naysayers who fully intent to hate the next movie -- in advance, during and after -- and hate you for not thinking the same way. There have been five live-action Trek TV series on the air, and every show has fans that call it their favorite of the group.

Ever notice the people who "hate" the movie actually talk about the reasons why they "hate" it, and the "real" people only ever seem to bitch about them for not liking the movie?

If we are being truthful, I think we are too busy laughing at grown adults busting a gut about registry numbers, nacelles and the colour of carpets. :guffaw:

Really? Because all I ever see are people bitching and whining, and calling people like me "haters" or "naysayers", or trying to run me down by saying something like what you just did.

No worries, I'll weather it just like I have every other debate I've gotten involved in.

Sorry, how about "The Kelvin having a zero to start the registry number is worse than the holocaust and my childhood's been completely raped because of it"? That better?

So the people here who say they have an open mind despite reservations about the next movie who haven't been laughing at (not with) Captain Robert April, MattJC, The Wormhole, etc. -- by your "only ever seem to bitch" limited definition, they're bashing the bashers too?

Someone who says "I'm going to wait and actually see the movie before forming an opinion," is that a direct attack on MattJC?

All I know is threads like this make for incredibly boring conversation. Interesting, actually-use-your-brain sort of stuff like the "Speculation on Political Themes in Star Trek XI" thread dropped like a stone, but there are a dozen oft-refreshed threads all about people drinking Kool-Aid and being haters. It's basically waving your hands next to your face and hollering "nah-nah-nah, you're dumb!" Which is at least as pointless for grown adults to engage in as being worried about registry numbers and nacelles. I think... I think there was a time when Trek fans enjoyed the more thought-provoking aspects of being fans of a science fiction series.

No. Oh, and:

No, just the people with closed minds who won't accept any other view of the movie and insist on name calling and general bullying tactics against people who criticize the movie.

Someone who says "I'm going to wait and actually see the movie before forming an opinion,"
I haven't seen to many people who have said they're going to "wait and see" post here, probably because they're trying to avoid spoilers before they go and see it.

is that a direct attack on MattJC?
No, calling him a basher, or a hater, or a naysayer, that would be a direct attack on him.

Do you believe that MattJC, The Wormhole and Captain Robert April are open minded individuals who accept other views about this movie?

So what exactly is MattJC's stance if he isn't a basher, hater or naysayer? If I say Dennis Bailey is white, is that a direct attack on him?

Sort of like accusing people who don't agree with you of "drinking the kool-aid (which is really ironic given the mentality present among so many on this board) and call them haters.

They still are, but they also debate the merits of adhering to established storylines and staying true to the look and feel of the era instead of just randomly changing everything because someone thinks it looks cool.

I have a theory on that - maybe people here can confirm it for me. The more your day job involves that sort of stuff, the less likely it is that you want to have a "busman's holiday" online and if your day job is mundane then you are more likely to want to seek out intelligent conversation on-line. After a day of writing business proposals and knocking up academic papers full of ten dollar words, I just can't be arsed when I come here to do the same.

(hum.. maybe there's an academic paper in that - or at least some funding money to fuck around online for six month researching it...)

Oooooh.... I have one of those too:

yes, I'm obviously a hypocrite, because not blindly accepting whatever is put in front of me and pointing out that insulting everyone who disagrees with you makes me one. :techman:

I work at a museum and am daily immersed in scholarly material. I enjoy coming here and being silly and shallow. But I also enjoy coming here and discussing the more thought-provoking side of being into science fiction.

Dude, I'm sure if Henry Jenkins can be a professor at MIT and write a book about Star Trek fan fiction writers, you can work out that particular research grant. Go for it!

It's not my area (my area of academic is organisational behaviour and the use of information) but I went to a really interesting talk the other week about Wonder Woman and the male gaze. I might actually write a few comics related academic papers as a "hobby".

I'd have loved that! Comics (Wonder Woman even!) and gender studies. Woo hoo!

Now if I can just find that lecturer willing to do the female gaze and the Daniel Craig Bond movies...

'Scuze me. I'll be in my bunk. Back in 20.

So by insulting everyone who disagrees with you, what are you doing?

Oh, wait, I forgot, labeling people is only a direct attack if anyone but you does it.

Am I calling you names or assigning labels to you? Am I calling you a "TOS Atheist" or a "gusher" or anything else to the labels you've flung at myself or others like "TOS Fundie" or "hater" or "naysayer"? Have I accused you of living in your parents' basement? Apparently according to you, by pointing out that you're being a hypocrite, that somehow makes me a hypocrite. :vulcan:
