The new Star Trek series has been confirmed to be set ten years prior to The Original Series, which places it roughly in the era of "The Cage". Details HERE.

I'm curious what the longtime TOS fans here think of a more direct prequel to the original? Excited, curious, apathetic, angry?

Fuller states "We're set in the Prime universe, 10 years before Captain Kirk. We have the opportunity to bridge the gap between the Enterprise and the original series and really help us redefine the visual style of Star Trek." - it's Captain Pike's era, but not as we know it.

"redefining the visual style of Star Trek" won't be sitting well with a segment of the longtime TOS fans ;)

I hope most would be very excited though!

I'm not particularly bothered but it rings a tiny bell of mild annoyance. Why, oh why do people always feel the need to fill gaps? Well, I know it's human nature to want to do that, but it's very, very common to try and do it in sci-fi (Doctor Who is the same). I would have much preferred something with no forward continuity baggage. Set it 200 years after Nemesis.

You mean like TNG -- being 78 years after TOS, and with Next Gen, it did take 2 seasons for them to get on track.
No, I am very pleased with this. I am not even worried about aesthetics. Discovery could look like NX, or Pike's Enterprise or Kirk's. I will be happy for weekly adventures again.

Slipping it into an existing gap always seems to bring cries of 'but they can't meet thatspecies/havethatadventure/that goes against what we know from (insert iteration of ST here)' and I don't like to hear moaning fans moaning about something.

This era was the one I'd first hoped ENT would be in. Bring it on, especially after learning from what brought ENT down.

I'm especially looking forward to a canonical re-imagining of the look of PUTOS. :)

Just not enough information to base any kind of decision. Though I think it'll end up being a stealth reboot.

I'm shocked we haven't had a flood of Trekkies complain about robots in a show set 10 years before Kirk. Every android/robot Kirk encountered was a revelation...and a threat.

I literally cringe when I see people complain that a modern TV production like Enterprise or Discovery doesn't look like TOS...replicating the wrong-headed notion many TOS era fan productions choose to utilize. DS9 and STNG chose to pay homage to those sets, but they can't withstand the scrutiny of a whole series based in them.

Moving to Future of Trek, as this is not about TOS.

The mods there can decide to merge if appropriate.

Looks cool; i wonder what role the "female, Lt. Commander lead" will play? Will she be the CO of a small ship, or what?

Not a problem. Statements like that go a ways toward explaining the references to Discovery as a "reboot," though.

I very much look forward to seeing the TOS era redefined visually - Abrams has successfully done it on the big screen, after all. The more the merrier.

It's even possible, if this series runs long enough and the studio is interested in a sequel, that it could set up a rebooted TV series about Kirk and the original Enterprise. :techman:

I'm still excited about the new series, but I would rather it had been set after Nemesis.

From what I've read the lead won't be the ship's CO, but rather an officer under their command, to give a different dynamic to how the lead interacts with the rest of the crew, rather than being at the forefront as their commander, the lead is "one of the gang".

This could mean we might get an alien Captain!

It's about how the new series ties directly into TOS, and I put it in the TOS forum to get the perspective of the TOS die-hards who rarely wonder outside that subforum.

I don't get this obsession some fans have with a sequel series that takes place after Voyager and Nemesis.

As a fan of Crew, Early Voyages, The Cage, TOS and ENT, STD could be very good and I look forward to it.

    What does PUTOS stand for?

And I think you're being very optimistic when you say that any lessons were learned from Enterprise. Since they're doing Discovery as another prequel, which is one of the things that hobbled Enterprise, it's possible the makers of this new show didn't learn a thing.

    Also:

When Voyager was in the planning stages, it was hyped as the show that would break the rules, not play it safe, get edgy, and you never knew what might happen.

Then when Enterprise was in the planning stages, it was hyped as the show that would break the rules, not play it safe, get edgy, and you never knew what might happen.

So I won't be too surprised if Discovery ends up in familiar, well-worn ST-episodic territory before too long into its run. It's easy to promise brilliance when you're planning a TV series.

I was kinda hoping it would be decipherable. :(

Well, that's not what I meant, though I can see in retrospect how what I wrote could be read that way. What I meant was, "I'm ready for another prequel, provided the lessons have been learned as to why ENT failed." (It was written as an imperative.)

Being a prequel wasn't in and of itself a problem.

    True.

It's been over a decade now since ENT, and longer since VOY. CBS All Access is a completely different marketing paradigm, more directly dependent on subscriptions. If the showrunners produce a turkey, it will die a quick death, and the producers will have fucked up big time.

I really hope they use the Cage landing party jackets as inspiration for the uniforms, with some tailoring and a chest insignia, they would look great.

Every time someone uses "STD" as an abbreviation for Discovery, a kitten dies.
