Disappointed by Lack of 50th Lit

Little bit of a gentle moan here. I'm in England and we get bookazines and magazines about just about every topic under the sun but where are the ones celebrating Trek's 50? Well, there aren't any that I can find. When Doctor Who had its 50th it seemed like the shelves were groaning, in fact as well as the monthly Doctor Who mag we get regular bookazines and magazine specials. Where is the Star Trek Magazine special? Where's the SFX special? I mean, there isn't even an official 'out of universe' glossy book. The BBC publish reams and reams of books about Doctor Who, whither Star Trek?

According to my tracking database, there are 55 book titles already published in 2016 or scheduled through the end of the year, not including comic book/comic strip collections (25 titles) or individual comic books (including cover variants & reprints, another 65 titles).

I don't track magazines in my database, so I can't give exact figures, but off the top of my head I know of special issues from TIME and ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, the quarterly Star Trek Magazine, plus a couple special editions from Titan. Cover stories about Star Trek Beyond from a bunch of other publishers...

Perhaps not the tsunami that greeted Doctor Who's fiftieth, but it's still a bunch of stuff...

I'm speaking specifically from a UK perspective and let me tell you, Star Trek is woefully underrepresented on newsagent and book shop shelves. We don't get TIME or Entertainment Weekly on the shelves here.

Well, from a UK perspective it isn't the 50th; that's 2019 ;-)
More seriously, there's no on-screen product aside from Beyond, and no UK company with an interest, so no-one to originate stuff. We might get a magazine special now it's September , but only if the publisher can get the licence to do one...

That's too bad. There's actually been FOUR souvenir magazines here in the states: from Time, EW, Newsweek, and TV Guide. And the official U.S. postage stamps just went on sale.

The 50th Anniversary of Trek does seem to have been downplayed for some reason. Doctor Who felt like it was more a big international event than Trek has. Even the movie seemed to have had a low-key marketing strategy. Maybe it is just perception and Ireland is closer to UK than America that Doctor Who felt like more of a big deal.

I've been disappointed too. Even in the US it felt like the Doctor Who's 50th was a much bigger deal than Trek's, which seems weird to me since I would think overall Trek was probably more popular for a longer period here. I guess it must just be because DW's anniversary managed to come at a time when the franchise is on a major upswing in popularity, while Trek's popularity is at a low point right now.

The monthly Titan "Star Trek" magazine is ongoing. They had (two?) "special" making-of tie-ins for "Beyond" which are now getting a combo international hardcover release in November. It's already on Amazon.

Where is the Star Trek Magazine special? Where's the SFX special?

"Empire" did a two-volume 50th retrospective and "SFX" did "Beyond":

Titan has also released a "best of" edition featuring past articles to celebrate the 50th. Volume 1 (below right) is out and focuses on all 13 movies. Volume 2 is coming soon.

DK (former Dorling Kindersley) is a UK publisher and recently released "The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained" by Paul Ruditis et al. And "Redshirt's Little Book of Doom" by Robb Pearlman & Anna-Maria Jung is also a UK book, I think. It's only just hit USA, but we got that in Australia months ago!

Titan holds the license and you can bet they'll do a 50th anniversary issue within their regular run.

Ah! It's out this weekend (see my next post).

All your links are to US websites, I'm talking specifically about UK really. Shipping from the U.S. To UK has become ridiculous recently. I was looking to buy a copy of Lindys MLB preview and the mag was $7.99 but shipping was something like $20, given the exchange rate I just cannot afford those things.
The guide to the universe book does look great and is on my list to buy.
Kelvin stuff doesn't really interest me.
That Titan special, are you sure? Check out the date of the news story.

The links were simply to show you the images, but they were UK publications that are sold in USA and are also available to UK customers, ie. from your local stores (order them through the Diamond Orderpak at a comic store), a bookshop (place an order) or Titan's (and the other publishers') website(s). I wasn't expecting you to place orders with the US Amazon. I was highlighting UK publications, as you'd requested. They are also on Amazon UK, but I don't normally go there.

Sorry, wrong one. That's what popped up in my Google search and I wasn't noticing it was their regular yearbook wrap-up.

Since Titan is an ongoing "Star Trek" magazine, I cannot imagine why they'd ignore the 50th anniversary. (EDIT:) Ah! Here's their latest 50th Anniversary special now available, with an exclusive New York convention cover, this weekend. I presume other covers for other locales.)

Agreed but I've yet to see anything appear. I don't think that Trek is treated as seriously as Who when it come to lit. There are dozens of books, and very serious research, coming out every month. My Who itch is easily scratched but I find it the opposite with Trek. Is it more controlled?

The Star Trek Magazine 50th anniversary issue is out next week - see http://titanmagazines.com/t/star-trek/uk/185/

be glad that in the UK there is atleast some, here in the Netherlands (in Groningen) I struggle to get my hands on anything Trek. Even the Comic store refuses to have anything on Trek since it is "crap", as in there are few to no sales on it.

Yep, it went on sale at the New York convention this weekend, with an exclusive con cover.

I guess they got tired of getting stuck with magazines on their shelves but, as a comic shop, they would use the Diamond Orderpak (no longer Pocket Books, but definitely all the magazines, comics and fact books) and they should be happy to special order any Trek material you need from that, three months in advance. Start up a standing order. I have had one since about 1984.

Of course, Special Ordering doesn't allow you to browse, then reject it. But the comic shop can order single copies, even if they don't want shelf copies.

In Germany there is currently no way to watch Doctor Who outside of Netflix/Amazon Prime, Pay TV or DVD/Blue-Ray. Also I (as someone who wasn't a fan or knew anything about the show apart from a mention on Big Bang Theory back then) did not notice that it was the 50th Doctor Who anniversary. At least for Star Trek they show some "best of ST" episodes and mention it on the radio once.

All I can do is browse the IDW catalogs, hope there is something in it and I order it before the month starts or I get nothing. Also it costs a premium. Premium as in each dollar costs me two euro's. Thing is, when ordering online I pay even more, but on a Student's budget, that's not funny at all.
I am though already thinking of adding a (bi-)monthly trip to Enschede or Leer (Ger) or Den Haag just to browse the comic shops.

There's no Trek or Who on the telly in NL that I have found, there are no novels in the bookstores at all, so count yourself lucky with Tele Fünf showing at least something.

That is really sad. Both are some of the finest sci fi shows. Tele5 does indeed do a good job at showing Trek. Back when I watched it on telly every series except TOS and ENT were airing on Tele5. It was an easier time...

Newsweek actually released two: one in January/February ("Celebrating America's Original Sci-Fi Phenomenon") and another later in the year ("The Definitive Tribute").
