Variety| Joel Schumacher Dies at 80

Though he's been villified in geek circles over his Batman movies, the director made some absolute classics like "The Incredible Shrinking Woman", "St. Elmo's Fire", "The Lost Boys", "Flatliners" or "Falling Down".

He died of cancer.

In my opinion, the Batfilms he made were his only real missteps as a filmmaker (too much the TV show fan, he). Other than them, he had an incredible body of work that is and should be highly respected.

He freely admits the mistakes he made with Batman & Robin, that the studio wanted a toy commercial and he obliged. Unfortunately, he and Alicia Silverstone never really recovered from that movie.

Turns out the last movie of his I watched was Phone Booth (2002). My favorite of his films has to be Flatliners (1990).

It’s sad that he’s largely remembered in our sort of board for the Batman films (I’ve a soft spot for Forever but hate B&R with a passion) because he made some really good films. The Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down, Tigerland, Phone Booth and Veronica Guerin.

By all accounts he was a very nice guy personally and I saw a few tweets yesterday from people who met him or worked with him in Dublin during the shooting of VG; all praised his calm, pleasant manner, even one evening when everything seemed to be going wrong for the shoot.

RIP
