In part why I hate the whole "America first" mindset when it comes to things like this.

BTW I read this online but am not going to say if its true or not but doesn't the USA have enough oil internally through drilling to provide for itself? So why does it need the Middle East's oil if it can make enough for itself?

I can't speak to that point, and I am going to refrain from getting too political in that regard. The inevitable politics within the realm of spaceflight are strong enough. But I do wish our drive to explore didn't depend on having to race against someone else, as that ends up being a self-defeating goal. Sure, you may REACH something,... but once its reached, the drive that got you there is gone and so there is no longer desire to stay. ... hell, the people at large gave up after Apollo 12, and that was technically a TEST flight, we hadn't even BEGUN to explore yet
