Did "Beyond" happen?

Do you think Beyond The Farthest Star happened but in some alternate Earth? And what exactly was the intent of the Prophets to even put Sisko through this? Did he 'learn' something about himself???

Seriously though. What was the whole purpose of Beyond The Farthest Star?
