The author, Kage Baker, creator of The Company series of books, apparently died 1/31 of this year. I didn't hear a thing-just found a link to her web site and read the above. She's one of the more recent authors who's work I really enjoyed- no hack writing set in a pre-made, movie franchise universe or based on a video game but original, interesting science fiction. I've read all of her Company stories that I could get my hands on-and now it looks like there will be no more.

I'd heard she was ill, but not that she had died. That's very sad. I've only read the first of the Company novels, In The Garden of Iden, but I liked it and was planning on continuing with the series.

What?! No! That sucks like crazy! I'm a very recent fan and after reading everything she's already written, I was looking forward to new books from her...

After the initial shock that was my second thought. I just found her about 2 years ago and hoovered up all of her published work to date. Looks like an expanded edition of her novelette Empress of Mars is out/coming out this month.

The new Empress of Mars is out now. They just got it in at the campus bookstore the other day. I was so tempted, but hardcovers are so expensive... I'm gonna be returning the copy of Alice in Wonderland I just bought because it only has the first story in it, so I think in exchange I'll buy Empress of Mars.
