Diamond Select Tricorder Choices

I see that they are making two: a sciences tricorder and a medical tricorder. The differences between the two seem to be a matter of some deep secrecy--a different scanner, perhaps, and hints that there will be an additional compartment on the medical tricorder.

Do I want to spend an extra $40 + S&H to get both? Why or why not?

Advice would be welcome.

(I've already ordered the sciences tricorder, btw.)

And what do you expect us to say? No, don't spend more money on Star Trek toys.

I don't think so.

I just don't want to find out that the sciences scanner has a little red light on the bottom, while the medical scanner has a little blue light.

Are they really going to be so different from one another that it warrants buying one of each?

It's not the money that's an object--it's buying them both and finding out that they are basically the same damned toy with one or two minor differences.

Sigh. I like the accuracy of modern toys, but I miss the simplicity of the toys they sold when I was a kid. None of this "special edition" crap.

I'm thinking of going with the medical tricorder. Most likely gonna be the same, except with that little scanner of McCoy's, as opposed to whatever kind of scanner they're including with the standard science tricorder.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with trying to track down another bronze handled phaser...

Diamond Select (more specifically Art Asylum) stuff is great for the price. I have some to be used as throwaways. If you hit the lottery or are invited to participate in Brewster's Millions for real, Master Replicas are the way to go. However, besides the price, the real problem with the Master Replicas is that they look, feel, weigh and act so real, you're disappointed that they can't really do anything like stun the wife, scan for her presence, disrupt the kids, etc, etc. Hell, I've never even been able to heat a single rock with their phaser!

But the Art Asylum phaser (which brings far less subconscious expectations mostly because of material and weight and quality in the sound department) has been known to distract a pet here at important times (please stop drawing blood from my wife's foot for your own enjoyment) and if the pet gets ahold of it, I'm only out $17! Although I'm on my third Art Asylum Phaser (don't take the phaser 1 out too often), they still have the best bang for the buck.

I think that trekmovie reported the only difference would be that the medical tricorder had a removable scanner, so it's probably best just to buy the medical one. I would consult their archives to confirm that though - I remember the story being pretty detailed.

An accurate Science Tricorder's lower compartment would come with a Tootsie Pop in it, since the story goes that's where Nimoy stashed them when the cameras were rolling. :D

And never taking the thing out of the packaging to play with it is downright pathetic.

DEATH TO THE SPECULEECHES!!

NRFP! Never remove from packaging! Seriously, I still buy toys but I don't keep them in the packaging. I take them out, play a bit with them and display them. I collect these things for me and not for any future investment.

Yeah, but MANY people buy two of each item they like-one to open, and one to keep mint in the package. Happens all the time.

All that does is perpetuate the madness.

THROW OFF YOUR SHACKLES, PEOPLE!! YOUR TOYS ARE MEANT TO BE PLAYED WITH!! FREE THEM FROM THEIR PLASTIC SARCOPHAGI AND LET THEM BREATHE!!

:D

AMEN TO THAT!

OH, AND THE WOMEN!

...THIS IS THE SHOUTING SPOCK THREAD, RIGHT?

Buy both, buy multiples of each prop replica. Because there's a small part of you that still thinks he's gonna take his video camera and make a Star Trek episode and you'll need to outfit the "cast".

No wait, that's me. Sorry.
