Developing NCC-1701's Apex Class [3D]

^^ The bussards aren't covered they're just smaller. ;)

I'm thinking of it as starfleet experimenting with a different bussard collector arrangement. You're likely to collect the most particles along the centre-line of the bussards, so having a full dome exposed isn't going to add a great deal.

And onto the nacelles:

I love what you have done with the nacelles. A few nitpicks though ... :p

I think the nacelles could be a tad bit larger. It really is just a feeling, but they seem a bit small compared to the rest of the ship.

I also would elongate the pylons about a fourth of their current length. I don't know, I just think it looks better.

One thing about the nacelle caps (which look beautiful on your model): I originally planned to do something different for the nacelle caps and came up with the idea that there somehow was a cap put over the standard cap. Maybe this sketch makes clear what I'm talking about.

But I like the way you have done the caps. Of course you can always rationalize it with Starfleet testing new techniques. ;)

But anyway, I'm still loving it and am very flattered to see you're still working on it. You're doing great work and I'd like to see it finished. Take this wherever you want. :bolian:

Thanks for the input NCC-1701. I'm glad you're still enjoying the results.

Looking at it now, I think you could be right about enlarging the nacelles. I'll give it a try. :)

I've taken a step back with the nacelles, whilst I try to settle their size. I've beefed up the diameter and increased their length.

Perhaps, I'm going from one extreme to another here, but it seems to me the nacelles look best when they either don't extend beyond the length of the engineering hull (as in the last set of pics) or where they extend far beyond the hull, here:

What do you think?

 Wow, that certainly looks interesting. Those nacelles run on Viagra, don't they? ;)

No seriously, I like it a lot. I had to adjust to the look first, but I really like it now. The original Daedalus nacelles are also quite long, so it does make some sense. But if you leave them at that lengh, I would make them a tad bit smaller now. The proportions look slightly off. At least in the rear view.

I hear it's more reliable than dilithium. :p

Yeah, the longer nacelles seem more in keeping with similar ships of the same period, so I figure on keeping them that length.

In the rear view I think the right-hand side nacelle is suffering from a camera lensing or perspective effect making the proportions look a bit odd. The left-hand nacelle doesn't look so bad. Maybe they just need to be tapered a little more.

I think the longer nacelles look great. They could be the same family of nacelles used on early Constitution-class vehicles. That would put into perspective the size of the ship.

I have to agree...the longer nacelles make the whole design look much more fantastic.

Just a suggestion:

How about lifting the round part up a bit, so that it looks more like a ceptre: circle centered on a cylinder.

And the backside with that, lets call it "foreskin" :D, maybe just have it rounding up, so like a hemisphere, because this extra bit looks a bit strange and starfleet usually builds ships which are economically sensical, i.e. no unnecessary decorations and stuff like that.

But arpart from that I think it's perfect if it gets windows and writing onto it. Will you put it into a spacey background?

Unnecessary decoration?! How do you know it doesn't serve a function? ;)
For the end of the nacelles I was trying for a variation on the ball at the rear end of the Enterprise nacelles, but a little more primitive looking.

All in the fullness of time. :) I've been distracted by other things lately, but I'm not giving up on this.

Thanks for the input friedebarth.

That's an interesting idea, Wingsley. The thing is, wouldn't that tend to hide the detail/structure of the caps from most views? I like the thought of doing something a little different... hmmm, I might put my own spin on your idea. ;)

The reason I suggested it is because the structure of this ship seems to make it a more or less direct descendent on ZC's Phoenix... or the NX-Alpha.

Just a little update...

MadMan1701A recently started a new pseudo-JJverse thread on a very similar vessel he calls the Starship Archon. Think of the Apex, but as if it were Kelvinized.
