Destination Star Trek Birmingham 2019

Be there from tomorrow morning, got my tickets for the Picard presentation, such a shame he's not doing photos or signing, I'd love to meet him properly.

That’s that for another year. I see that the next one is in London, that’s handy for me.

Only got the two photoshoots / autographs.

Anson Mount – Was surprised how quiet he was, the polar opposite of his Hell on Wheels character. His wife was chatty though.

George Takei – Quite possibly the nicest man I had ever met, really chatty, a true icon.

The Picard talk was great, wow that man has some presence. He looked quite frail though, I am happy to already have a photo with him along with his autograph, I can’t see him doing those again (well certainly not en masse).

There was a guy totally distraught at the autograph queue on Saturday afternoon when he was told that his virtual queue number was too high and they wouldn’t get to it. I did my nice deed for the decade and gave him both of our commander tickets with all of our autograph allocations still intact.

How did others find it?

Enjoyed the event but London is a bummer. All hotels near Excel booked out in no time, plus is a more expensive location on every level. Think I'll have to give it a miss until they move back somewhere more accessible.

It was good took a work colleague to his first convention and hopefully booking next year once work have confirmed I have the dates off, London is better for me and hotels are not that bad if you book in advance one next to excel is roughly the same price as I booked in Birmingham.

It was good to get back to conventions loved the old creation entertainment ones back in the days, the only down side I had was the sound was sometimes a problem due to it being in an open space you could hear other talks over the one you where listening to.

You'll be lucky with that. Every hotel on the Excel website is saying fully booked for those dates already, plus individual company ones I've looked at also.

That's strange as you cant even book that far in advance and that's on the hotels own websites, most go up to September / October find it very hard they would all be booked so far in advanced.

Just looked on 4 Hotel websites and they all go up to September nothing beyond and that's next to excel

I don’t see how that’s possible when you can’t even book an hotel yet. You have to wait until next month until they are available.
There’s the ibis that is close buy you can book. It’s only a short train ride away. I did that in 2014.

I hope I don’t make the same mistake me book the wrong Hilton this time round. I mean seriously, who puts two Hilton’s in the same area? :)

Hotel booked - ibis budget London City Airport only £152 and about 10 min walk - the other Ibis hotels have already been booked as I looked a few days ago and had rooms but none now

Still not available yet. I’ll have to wait until the 16th to get them it seems.

Couple of friends already got rooms in other ibis hotels next to excel spoke to them on phone and they are all booked at the moment for those dates now they said

Find that hard to believe that far in advance. Even so it’s London. Plenty of hotels there.

Yeah that's what I thought but 2 days ago they had rooms available and now none, rang them up and they said fully booked now but this was only for ibis hotels the others saying they won't be available until later but they are a bit too expensive for me but will keep checking already got hotel but would rather have a better one than the budget one I got for 3 nights but at the end of the day not like I will be spending much time in hotel.

Have booked Ibis in Canning Town as a back up but yeah, other closer hotels should be going live in the next few weeks and months. Excel website were clueless in saying everywhere was fully booked.

Well that's everything booked for next year now decided to go for Captains tickets in this time only thing I need to do is pay off CC

I've pretty much decided to give it a miss next year. London prices plus the extra travel costs push an already very expensive convention out of the affordability range for me. I enjoy MCM at the Excel, but that's a con where the £60 entry fee gets you two days of entertainment at no extra cost necessary except food. DST has maybe two hours of diversion in it, if you dawdle, unless you pay to interact with guests. I'm not mad about that, it is what it is and I go because they get the good guests that MCM struggle to attract. But it is an unavoidable truth, and so it is an expensive con to go to, with photos and autographs adding up quickly. The prices have gone up again next year (Jeri Ryan has jumped up £20 from her 2018 price); add in London travel/hotel expenses and it's probably a No from me :(

I've been trying to think who they could offer who would be worth it and actually the list of Trek big names I haven't met but would really want to is now pretty short. If they offered Patrick Stewart doing photos/autos this time, I'd go. I might go for Simon Pegg. That's probably it.
