Departure Pilot Preview Out Now!!

I tried watching this but there was no sound, and my other media files play fine. Any info?

Are you on a Mac? Try a different browser maybe. Windows Media sucks.

As for the video, here are my crits-

  • The opening credit text was too low res, especially bad since you zoomed in on it, and you zoomed in too soon, making them even harder to read.
  • You're starting off in the holodeck? Why? How about an establishing shot that says something about the setting, storyline, characters, etc. Also- Vegas? Really? Didn't Deep Space 9 do that? Of everything you could have chosen, that seems very unoriginal. Also, DS9 didn't do 20th century Vegas in their 1st episode. Best to leave modern references out of most of your Trek- it doesn't help the illusion that this is a story about the 24th century.
  • The audio is quite bad, and worse, uneven.
  • The opening conversation is meant to set up a lot of plot points, but I found it hard to follow. It could be clearer.
  • Another drydock scene. I will always complain about these- every fanfilm seems to have them. What's way worse is that you used the same music from STTWOK drydock scene. You may be in love with your ship, but we're not (yet). No more slow, drawn out drydock scenes set to that music please!
  • A lot of your FX shots are too long. Again, you love your ship and your FX, but try and not over indulge. Just show us what we need to see to move the story along.
  • Section 31- ALREADY? Seems a little soon, though I guess it fits in with what we've seen so far. In general though, I'd say when it comes to plot, use restraint- don't throw in everything at once.
  • The briefing room scene- who is he talking to? OK, I know this is just a preview, I assume you're going to edit in reaction shots of the other actors later. Maybe edit in a "scene missing" or "reaction shot" slide- it would help you in your editing and make previews like this easier for test audiences to watch.
  • Nice to hear a reference of Shelby from Hidden Frontier. Using the Vidiians as antagonists should be interesting too.

Sorry to see another fan film built around combat rather than exploration, but still glad to watch any fanfilm with a dedicated crew and a good story. Despite my nits, I hope you keep it up and I look forward to seeing more.
