Definitely a space vessel of some type - Madman Reliant

Manticore

Manticore, A moment ago
Admiral

New art! After watching Into Darkness, I decided that I wanted to do the nuStarfleet finding Khan.

In principle, I love it. The stark lighting philosophy is one I support whole-heartedly. But, I have to admit it took me a few seconds to realize what I was looking at.

Maybe turn on the lights in the Bussard collectors? Maybe turn up the fill ever so slightly? Maybe reposition the camera to see a little more of the lit area to better see the ship's profile?

I probably spent an hour alone getting the Bussards to look right. In nuTrek, they often aren't on or shining very brightly. xD

I appreciate the constructive criticism though.

Is that more to your taste Albertese?

Holy crap, there are two ships in the picture?!

Seriously man, drama is nice, but if you want to show something off, light it up.

Albertese, thanks for the constructive criticism. :)

Manticore, would it be possible to add another light source? It is very hard to see more than the vague outlines of the smaller ship.

I like the re-lit version. Personally I can live without more lighting of the Botany Bay; clear enough what it's meant to be and the Reliant is the star of the picture.

While I answered this elsewhere already, I'll repost it here:

- Practically, that model is very old and just not up to such a high-res image
- Aesthetically, I'll always prefer lighting my images to hint at things rather than outright showing them off. I feel that having an air of mystery to the Botany Bay improves the image.

Granted, originally, it was a bit dark, now I almost feel that the BB is almost too bright for the quality of the model.

Lovely. As it was before, the lit portion of the starboard nacelle looked like a piece of wreckage or something. Now it's obviously part of the ship and it looks great.

And the still dark Botany Bay is fine. Giving it just a bit of rim light adds to the mystery of it.

Much improved.

Is the contrast setting off on you people's monitors or something?

The picture(s) look good to me a fairly "realistically" lit while also acknowledging space is, you know, dark unless you're close to a star. I'm able to see both ships perfectly fine, the Botany Bay looks realistically lit given that it's under the saucer section of much more massive ship.

One of the biggest problems that I've found with digital art is that I keep my monitors much brighter than average. Otherwise, I get terrible eyestrain. This means that stuff that looks interestingly dark to me ends up as black fields to other people. xD

It's not that their contrast settings are off, it's that I have my monitor calibrated differently than the norm, and I always forget to account for that.

One other issue is that when I post pictures to Facebook for the consumption of my friends, it always darkens the images. It's uncanny. :wtf:

Also, keep in mind that the one in the first post isn't the one that was originally posted. That one isn't even available online anymore; everyone was right, it was too dark, so I replaced it.

For everyone's curiosity, this is the version that I originally sent to my proof"reader".

Ah, okay. Yeah. that's pretty dark.

The one in the OP now looks good to me.

To clarify, that wasn't the one that I posted in the OP. I can't find it now, but maybe when I get home. That was my first draft at the "final image".

For reference, the three versions (and so that people stop accusing earlier posters of needing new monitors :p):

My original render of the complete composite, the "rough draft" that I had my normal proofviewer comment on (there are about 6 of these, but this is the first one):

I really hated what this version did to my starfield though - I'd spent hours making that starfield and getting it just right. I do like the almost bronze tone of the key lights in this version though, which gets a bit lost in the later versions.

The first one that I had uploaded after going over it with my proofviewer:

And the current and final version:

I like it, very cool idea... but I think the bussards should be brighter - but thats just me, it's your creation and you need to be happy with it.

That was constructive. If you want to show off a ship design, light it so people can see what it looks like. I honestly couldn't tell there were two ships in your first post, nor make out the shape of the primary. If that's not what you were going for, then I'm sorry, but that was my reaction.

The nuEnterprise doesn't seem to have very bright bussards. xD

I'm not sure why, but they never seem to be lit up.
