Decisions, decisions....

Smitty

As I touched upon in another thread, this weekend I finished the "The Lost Years" novel. I found it to be entertaining. Now I am contemplating what to start next. I am sort of focused on either starting Destiny or the Vanguard series. I noticed in the historians note in the first Destiny book that there is a DS9 episode that I may want to watch first.
Anyway, I need to decided. Good problem to have I think!

Yes, the prologue of the novel takes place just a week after "Children of Time," as part of the same Gamma Quadrant survey the Defiant was on. But the events of that episode don't really have anything to do with the story; the note isn't saying "you need to know what happened in that episode," it's just saying "If you're curious where the prologue falls in the DS9 timeline, this is it."

You really won't go wrong with either; they're in my opinion the two absolute peaks of TrekLit, and I've bought both for a few people, and succeeded in getting each one into TrekLit cold. So really, either is going to work out.

But if you have to pick, I guess since Destiny is 3 books and Vanguard is 5 and counting, I'd start with Destiny.

My understanding is that one of the Vanguard books is hard to find due to some kind of issue with the ISBN, and it's being re-issued later this year or early next year. If you're going with e-books, it's not an issue.

Yes, Vanguard is (currently) five books.

Destiny ... well, see, it's Star Trek as a whole, you see. Yes, there's three books in that specific trilogy, but it includes TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Gorkon, Riker's spin-off that I can't remember the name of, and as far as I can remember every Trek series, on screen and in books, in some way. And it's like the Nexus Ribbon, meaning the events will affect all the books published after it in all the various series. So it's a pretty big event to read.

It's extremely well-written, and it feels like the author has a huge respect for the material he's working with.

^ Unfortunately, Vanguard #3 is actually not going to be reprinted. That's some kind of other mistake. The whole situation is extremely frustrating.

But as you say, with eBooks it isn't an issue.

You can't go wrong either way. Destiny was a huge event but Vanguard is probably my favorite on going series right now. Flip a coin...

I have decided upon Destiny, based upon various postings through the years I expect it to be quite a ride!

Is that the entry for a pricey trade paperback edition? I believe that (along with other similar listings that cropped up a few months ago) has been confirmed as a mistake on Amazon's part.

Correct. David Mack said as much at Shore Leave and has confirmed it here as well.
