The Story of Commander Blue

Some years ago a damaged android was left drifting in space. He drifted for some time until some traders found him. He had been outfitted and served with the traders. He had been taught the trader way – devious and always looking for another credit.

That’s when a pirate came. He had some business to do with the traders. He saw the damaged android. Since the android was of Earth origin, there was value. The pirate traded two hiding shield casters for the android. It is that or an entire Imperial battle cruiser. Either way it was a high amount.

The android was improved on by the pirate’s friend. He had gotten the name “Blue Eyes” from the traders. The pirate simply shortened it to “Blue”. The pirate gave the android to his friend to “improve”. Alas in the exchange, the pirate and his friend were bushwhacked by the Imperial Navy, and the android was set loose.

The android was struck by the dying pirate’s name. He took over that Imperial battle cruiser single handedly with his mighty strength. At one point he towered over the captain of the Imperial Navy – almost about to slay him in the most devious matter – and the death of the pirate lurked in his mind.

The captain was spared. He later was pilloried by his own Imperial Navy –for that is what they do in the name of honor. It is that or he committed suicide for losing to an Earth android. The last words he sent out were – Lore, I have known.

The android soon fell into a good hearted company of pirates and thieves in his ramblings. He always wore the pirate’s uniform merged with the trader’s – a cloth type tabard with a fold in front. He did many good deeds and as a reward he got promoted to the rank of Commander. Thus began the adventures of Commander Blue and the Vulgar Company.

Twenty-two years later -

The Earth Agent was shown into the chamber. It was similar to the pictures he had seen of the Enterprise. In fact, he had been on the Enterprise himself. The only thing that lacked was the models of the other Enterprises in history and the gilded plastic.

In its place lay the rugged ribs and a large paneled window. It had the outlook to space and the greater worlds of the former Star Empire. The massed amount of ships that the Vulgar Company claimed lurked about. Some of them had the semblance of Imperial ships painted in the fashions of green birds of prey. The others made a rainbow of other species – captured beetle ships, Imperial cast-offs of an earlier war, and even older Earth ships. The actual Earth ships lay over there. They spoke of the Old Dominion War and the one that unfolded below.

The captain came in from the other door. He was accompanied by his serving man. The Earth Agent was uneasy at the presence of such things. The serving man was supposed to be free. His face resembled that of a troll, ravaged with Hansen’s disease. Of course the captain was no different, a rotund green man of unknown origins, complete with a sword belt from his right shoulder.

The serving man brought out a bottle, two cups, and a placemat from a nearby cabinet. The captain greeted the Earth Agent in his usual mannerisms. He talked about the fate of the world below and their natives. There was a slight dig to the Captain of the Enterprise and how he would never become Admiral, while the pirate had become Commodore in the same amount of time. The bottle was poured. The taste was sour. The serving man disappeared in the other door.

“Now – on to business my dear Agent of Earth” he said in his rolling tongue. “You had something that could not be mentioned in my merry company of compatriots.” He grasped that silver cup and doused the red liquid in there. He swallowed it up. Behind him lay old weapons in a cabinet.

“Yes – your Commander Blue that was… sorry, that is so heralded for his good deeds” the Earth Agent began. He pulled out a computer pad. There was the report written in the stereotypical prose of the Fleet Intelligence.

"He is a good man. Did I not tell you that he was very good at attacking? Why he plowed through that mass wave of beetle ships like if they were clay!” the captain exclaimed. He had a chuckle. He poured another cup for himself. “He was truly a great find."

“His name is Lore” the Earth Agent read from the document. “He was guilty of luring a Crystal Entity to a small colony and everyone died.” He looked at the pirate captain. There was no facial reaction on his green face. “Earth is grateful for the Vulgar Company’s actions in the Star Empire and their assistance to the 8th Fleet. However… his name is Lore.”

The pirate captain took off his belt. He put the belt on the table. There was a clunk. He took off his vest. It was not hard to see that much of the bulk came from the armor. The Earth Agent had seen him in combat. Although the brutal activity of Commander Blue shocked him, it was the pirate captain that made him uneasy. The pirate captain withstood an outright attack by the rogue elements.

“Listen Captain Gorse” the Earth Agent began.

“It is Commodore Gorse” the pirate captain interceded.

“Commodore Gorse – the 8th Fleet is honestly regretful that this order came from Earth. Obviously they aren’t aware of the mess here in the Empire and if it is, then it’s only about the capital worlds not the refugee worlds” the Earth Agent protested.

The pirate captain went to the cabinet. He opened the drawer. He looked at the weapon cabinet. He drew a laser rifle from the cabinet. He put it on the table. The rifle had the semblance of an old Winchester. The pirate captain also drew out another bottle from the cabinet, this time of a blue liquid.

“We can ignore this order” the Earth Agent continued. “After all Earth has to deal with the Star Empire and all their politics. I mean – you haven’t seen the reports coming from the Union. The 9th Fleet is still trying to get their people back up, even though all their civilized worlds are gone."

The pirate captain poured himself a drink. He was silent. He stared at the cup that held the red liquid. The Earth Agent forced himself to finish it.

"I have heard of this Lore” the pirate captain rolled, this time with a deeper voice. “I have even heard of his brother. His brother is with the Enterprise is he not? The famous Enterprise that was never in the War and conveniently caused this entire mess. I tell you the poor sods have no leader and that’s why I cast my lot with you. There has to be some order in this Empire and the Union.” The pirate captain leaned back in his chair.

“Let me tell you a story then” the pirate captain continued. “Let us say that this Lore person never got into the Vulgar Company. He became … a man of terror let us say. He provokes the Enterprise in four encounters – count them – four encounters. He even links up with the android people that Earth always defeats in many battles. Then he is never seen again. His brother gets all the fame from the Enterprise and eventually gets slain in this muck – by muck I mean this sordid Star Empire on the ropes.”

The pirate captain opens the bottle. “The android gets killed while saving his captain. There’s another android running around that the Star Empire creates. But it is never the same and the presence of the android is never seen. Meanwhile the fabled executive officer – Riker was his name? – gets promoted finally to captain. Your famous captain is still at the help of the moribund Enterprise – this time in its eighth incarnation. The fabled lost in the Delta Quadrant ship comes back and all the glory is given to them. The famous captain is never heard from again. You shoot down the androids one more time –”

"They’re called the Borg Commodore Gorse” interrupted the Earth Agent.

“…and everyone is saved. Meanwhile everything in this world runs out of the brilliance of war and the toils of it. So the home world of the Star Empire blows up. Some idiot with a mining ship finds a time machine that you Earth people love to hide – and then goes back into time. You people finally find your errant Ambassador Spock –”

“He isn’t lost” inserted the Earth Agent. He reached for the bottle. By this time Captain Gorse was looking up at the ceiling and then to the open blackness of space.

“…and then the whole thing is started over again. It’s almost a reconstruction that demands the same amount of time and devotion that I put into building the Vulgar Company. That’s twenty years down the drain and I’m not even born on that desolate farm planet near Orion 3. No – the initiative is back on Earth’s front – and the whole thing starts all over again.” The pirate captain coughs. He leaves forward into his chair.

“It’s just a piece of paper that I can ignore” the Earth Agent said after drowning the bitter blue liquid.

“As you point out Earth’s got their problems.” He drank more of the liquid. “Plus I don’t see the merits of that rant.”

“No you don’t” Captain Gorse said. “The main point is that he would have never amounted anything in Earth’s eye anyway.” The features of his face fell into a stone visage that could have been the last thing that the Earth Agent would have ever seen. “That would be a no for handing Commander Blue over. That would be a no for any continued demands from Earth. I am very insulted by this.”

Captain Gorse poured himself another drink. There was a pause. He put the vest back on. “The Vulgar Company could have just walked away from the 8th Fleet’s suffering. I did not. The goodness of people must be preserved.” He pressed a button. The serving man came from the door.

"I’m telling you this so that you know what will come. We will still help you but I do not want to see these demands. You will tell Earth that Commander Blue will not be handed over. I will not tell my merry company about this and you will be blackmailed for springing this on me. The 8th Fleet can be left hanging in the wind. That is a possibility. But I will not do that for the sake of order in the Empire- Pedro’s family- and the goodness of people."

The serving man seemed taken aback by the mention of his name.

“You will do this Chamberlain Waller, Starfleet Intelligence Agent. Do I have your assent?” demanded Commodore Gorse.

The Earth Agent reluctantly nodded. Commodore Gorse grabbed the computer pad. He put it into his pocket. He then put the sword belt back on. He put the rifle back in the cabinet. Then there was a smile.

"Now – are you coming to the victory party?”

Explanation (if anyone is lost):

The Pirate Captain is referring to the events of the new Star Trek movie. The Vulgar Company is, obviously, the fleet he commmands and the Star Empire is the Romulan Star Empire. The Pirate Captain is not referred to as "Commodore" due to him being a pirate (therefore out of a structured fleet service) earlier in the piece. The first part of the story should be regarded as the main point of departure from our regular Star Trek timeline with the events of ST:TNG "Datalore" never occurring.

Interesting story, to be sure. Just a shame, as has been said elsewhere, it doesn't really fit in with the prompt of the challenge.
