December Art Challenge - Flux Capacitor

Tiberius Jim

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I know the challenge description asked for characters from episodes, but I don't fell like it'd be too much of a stretch to include the movies, too.

One thing I wished we had seen in the latest Trek film was more time spent aboard the Kelvin. While that opening sequence was very effective and moving, I have always felt that scenes like that are made more powerful if we get to know the characters as they are normally. That way, we feel that much stronger when we see all Hell break loose around them.

If such a book as this were ever written I think it could be very engaging. We could get a sort of back story about the Kelvin's mission, it's crew, especially the story of George and Winona and how Robau became captain.

The author is one of my favorite science fiction writers, one w I have always wished would try his hand at Trek, and if this book were written by him I don't think I'd ever put it down.

Let me know what you all think!

Seeing this makes you wonder what mission the Kelvin could have had in the Prime universe :) and i hope IDW see's this
art of yours :) :techman:

Your selection of author is top notch and the cover looks fantastic. However, the title is a bit bland. I suggest dropping the "the" and "chronicles" and just have it be Kelvin. Or you could even riff a Scalzi book title, like Robau's War or The Last Starship or The Kelvin Brigade (okay that last one is just corny, but you get where I'm going).

Another suggestion: make the Kelvin more prominent on the cover for dramatic impact, like the ships on the OMW book covers.

Awesome work!

I have to disagree about the title. I'm not sure how just the word "Kelvin" makes it *less* bland than the existing name. The way I envision it would see this as one book of many stories about the Kelvin, and not just one stand-alone novel. I definitely don't think a play on one of Scalzi's books would be very realistic.

Anything with "chronicles" in the title immediately turns me off a book--but that's just me, I will admit. Also, "chronicles" is a bit too newspaper-y in my mind. The word just doesn't get me excited.

A monepic title has a stronger register in the mind and ear. Kelvin has that strong "k" in it, which is reduced with the addition of "the" and "chronicles". Moreover, a monepic title has an air of mystery, making a potential reader want to pick the book up in the store and give it a look.

The riff suggestion was more for a sense of fun.

Since this is envisioned as a book series, maybe you can have a subtitle for the first book to go along with The Kelvin Chronicles.

Once again, awesome work.

The cover art needs some adjustment. Those beams of high-density badassery that originate in Captain Robau's eyes and are about to destroy that Klingon ship look like they're coming from phaser banks out on the primary hull.

Other than that, I rate this an A+! :)

Well I just re-checked some screencaps from the movie, and that's exactly where the Kelvin's phaser beams come from. I'm not sure where else they would come from, actually...

I did change the look of the beams to look more like the beams from the movie. I've also given the single "Kelvin" title a try, and made the back of the book.
