Dec Challenge Vote thread

I voted for nobody.

Not because the entries weren't good. But because I chose to holiday during the voting session. But I agree with Camelopard, there were many exceptional entries.

Congratulations to DavidFalkyn, and much thanks to those who voted for me. :)

Mistral, the unofficial rule in these contests is that you're not supposed to vote for your own story--even if you have more than one vote, and even if you honestly think that your story is the best.

I can tell you from personal experience that there are people in this forum who will insult you to your face for voting for yourself, using words like "shitty" and "shameful" to describe your behaviour, just to make sure you know how much holier they are than thou.

These people seem to think that voting for yourself is bad manners. Pity they won't get the beam out of their own eye before worrying about the mote in yours.

So, make sure to vote for someone else, even if you think their story is weaker than yours. At the very least, if you vote for yourself, don't admit it. When it comes to these challenges, appearances are more important than honesty.

Interesting, because last time I saw this discussed, it was considered odd if you were someone who didn't vote for your own story - the thinking being, if you didn't think your story was best why did you enter it?

*shrugs* Vote for whichever two you think are best, if one of them is yours fair enough.

hEY, MINE (darn caps lock) was flawed-but I started in early Dec and was still learning the rules-my story wasn't the best considering the history some of the other authors had so I got little play on the voting-next time, let's see what happens.I'm just waiting for a funny day. Then I will make them laugh!

I'm not getting into this discussion again, but frankly I already think my story is best, I'm not posting it for self affirmation, I want to know what other people think.

Voting for yourself if you're Tony Blair and 1 vote doesn't make a difference amongst millions is one thing, voting for yourself when the line between winning and losing is so close is something else.

But, to each his own. To be honest though it is one of the things thats discouraged me posting entries as much these days. Camelopard is right with his snide little comments though, because I do think it's bad manners (and even worse are those who spell out that they've voted for themsevles as if it makes everything ok.)

Anyway, that is my final word on the subject, because I'm so obviously in a minority here.

No, you're not. :) I agree with you here and I was very surprised at the admitted strategic voting (even though I appreciate the honesty) in this thread. I always thought the challenge was about practise and getting feedback to your work and then deciding which story you liked best. I think everyone should have voted for the 2 stories he/she liked best without any consideration whether that would diminish her/his own chances of winning.
I also think that it's bad manners to voze for your own entry though I can understand it if you really believe your entry is one of the two best.
Having only participated in the challenge twice I didn't want to be vocal about it but I don't want Starkers to feel alone in this.

*laughs*

I said that was what the opinion was last time I read the conversation, I didn't say that it was my opinion.

I don't think anyone is in the minority here - from what I can tell we have a 50/50 split on those who do vote from themselves and those who don't.

Hey, I am nube-and that's my defense. next month I will a.-vote twice instead of once and b.-exclude myself. Apparently I'm not that good anyway since I only got the one vote so I'm not going to worry about winning or losing. I'm just going to vote for the story(s) I think are the best. If I do vote for myself again it will only be if I think I honestly have the best tale. As for Starkers-everybody has an opinion-sorry if I riled you up-it was purely unintentional. I'm the new boy around here and don't want to step on any toes.

As anyone who has entered these challenges will assure you - not getting many votes doesn't mean you aren't a good writer, or that you didn't write a good story.

December's challenge had a ludicrously strong field of entries - I don't think I've seen so many before.

(For what it's worth, you would have got my vote but real life got in the way and I didn't get online to vote at all)
